It’s fair to say as comic book fans we have been spoiled recently. The likes of Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Logan, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor have graced our screens already this year. Not to mention one of my anticipated movies of all times Justice League which is only a couple of weeks away. However, with every trailer and piece of footage one half of me can’t wait to watch Justice League and the other half really can’t wait to the standalone Aquaman film next year. Whether its shots of Aquaman just floating in the water or him riding a parademon down into a building it makes the wait for December 2018 ever so painful. So in this article I’d figured I share the many reasons why the Aquaman film is one of my most anticipated films to come out next year. Let’s not forget the likes of Black Panther, Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War are also set to be released next year too.
A New Aquaman
Now what I mean by a ‘New Aquaman’ is the fact that he has become a character that can be taken seriously compared to his previous iterations. Lets be honest the Aquaman of the past wouldn’t have fit well into the Justice League movie and would most likely not get his own film. Thankfully in past years the character of Aquaman has gone under major reconstruction partly due to the recent Aquaman comic books. If you haven’t already I would highly recommend that you read likes of the Aquaman New 52 and the Rebirth series. These type of comic book series are a well needed change to the character with a more serious touch that bats away stereotypes of him being someone who just lives with fish under the sea. Theres a reason why in the very first Justice League Comic Con trailer Bruce Wayne says to Arthur Curry “I hear you can talk to fish” its almost acknowledging what comic book fans thought of the character in the past. Now with recent changes they are doing a great job of how the the character is perceived even by non Aquaman fans.
The main villain of the Aquaman film is going to be Black Manta who is set to be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Black Manta or otherwise known as David Hyde is a character that has always been Arthur Curry’s biggest rival since his first appearance in the 1976 Aquaman comics. Now without going into spoilers of the New 52 series there has always been a underlying conflict between Black Manta and Aquaman because of events in the past. Between the two there has been a lot of death and tension on both sides which I’m interested to see how they incorporate this into the film. What makes Black Manta a great villain is that he’s not only a threat to Aquaman but to the rest of the Atlantis. Black Manta with his army is no stranger to being someone who invades Atlantis leaving a path of destruction in his wake. Physically too he is a great challenge to Aquaman with his bullet proof armoured suit that allows him to adapt to the underwater environment. He is also very skilled in combat whether its with his technological advanced weapons or fighting fist to fist. This leaves Black Manta being a credible threat to Aquaman and a great choice as the main villain for the film.
The director who is attached to this project maybe one of the main reasons why I’m anticipating this film. James Wan is no stranger to a blockbuster film as he has films such as Furious 7 already on his resume. But what stands out to me from James Wan is his horror background. Its fair to say having directing films such as Insidious, The Conjuring and executive producing the majority of the Saw films he is somewhat of a horror expert. This excites me because I feel that Aquaman is a film that has to include elements of horror. The seven seas although may look beautiful of the surface can be a very scary place once you start dive under. I know this brings in the dreaded light vs dark tone debate when it comes to comic book films. I just feel that Aquaman should be a dark film, not saying that there can’t be a few humorous moments here and there. Aquaman has be a serious film about Arthur Curry whether much of the film is about his tragic past or his journey to the throne. With that being said James Wan is the perfect person to direct this film. With his past It’s easy to see why Warner Bros. hired him in the fist place to incorporate this horror/dark element to the film.
Last but not least the man who is set to play Aquaman himself Jason Momoa. No doubt this is most likely the main reason why so many people are looking forward to this film in the first place. I mean how could you not love this guy from what you’ve already seen in the Justice League trailers? Even when he’s not in character at events such as Comic Cons he just seems to be having so much fun. Although I previously mentioned the change in character of Aquaman in the comics. There are a lot of people who I know that haven’t read a single Aquaman comic but when they See Jason Momoa in the trailers they are sold on the character. Momoa brings a presence to character that makes you anticipate what he’s going to bring to the role not only in Justice League but his own solo film next December. Look love him or hate him but you have to give Zack Snyder credit for casting Momoa for the role. Even though it’s very early days it does look like he’s going to be the perfect choice.
With Justice League set to be released in a couple of weeks after that it will be a year long wait for fans like me to catch another glimpse of Aquaman on the big screen. Between now and early next year I hope that we get a teaser trailer to show us what direction James Wan is going to take this film in.
Let me know down below your thoughts on the Aquaman film and what movies you are anticipating between now and next year.
