If you were worried about the success of the first Deadpool movie being a fluke… All those fears are laid to rest as the numbers for the first weekend of Deadpool 2’s run are in. According to Forbes Deadpool 2 has made around $125 million in its first weekend making it one of the biggest openings for an R-Rated movie ever. Although it doesn’t beat the $132 million which the first Deadpool movie earned in its first weekend this is still a huge success. The drop off between the two numbers isn’t that big at all, also due to inflation we could see these numbers increase. If we are looking strictly on a numbers basis Deadpool 2 is definitely a success for the franchise and for the Fox brand. Amongst the movies that were released this year Deadpool 2’s opening weekend is only beaten by Infinity War ($250 million) and Black Panther ($218 million). To be beaten by these two films should bring no shame to anyone currently working at Fox. Especially if the Fox and Disney deal still goes through which only looks like it will be confirmed sooner rather than later. What this does show us is how comic book movies are now the popular medium in cinema. Isn’t that crazy to say? I would have never of thought that comic book movies would be amongst the highest grossing movies ever. As a lifelong comic book fan it’s great to see. Being a comic book nerd/geek is no longer seen as a negative. Comic books and movies are seen as cool now. This was shown with films such as Black Panther and Infinity War. I had never seen so many people who had never seen comic book movie be excited for these films. Hopefully this is a trend that continues to grow and we continue to see Box Office numbers such as these because that ultimately means we’ll get more comic book movies.
Here are the numbers for the first Deadpool movie:
- Deadpool (2016) Lifetime Gross: $363,070,709 million (2nd all time R-Rated movies)
- Deadpool (2016) Overall Box Office numbers: $783.1 million
Will it go on to outgross the first movie?
