Every Christmas there are no shortages of blockbuster films that grace the big screen and this Christmas is no different. The upcoming autumn season is already stacked when it comes to comic book movies as Venom and Aquaman are set to be released later in the year. If you know anything about me you’d know that as a DC fan I can’t wait for Aquaman. But I can’t lie there’s this little animated film by Sony which is also coming out this Christmas that currently has all of my attention and that is ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’. I was planning on writing about ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ when the first teaser trailer was released but I could never get around to doing it. Now with the release of the first official trailer only a couple of days ago I thought this would be the perfect time to talk about it. I’ve already lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it already. Hopefully I’m not getting ahead of myself here but I wanted to write about how ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ could be one of the biggest surprises of the year.
The Animation Style
Look I’m not an animation expert here but this trailer looks amazing! Damn near every shot in the trailer is beautiful. You can literally pause the trailer at any moment and you’ll still be greeted with a screenshot full of beautiful colours that you just can’t take your eyes off. I know there are no shortages of animated films today but this just seems different. Spider-Verse both looks and feels different than your typical Pixar animated film. Not to say that Pixar hasn’t done a great job it’s just nice to have something different for once. One of my favourite shots from the trailer is when Miles is talking and his speech bubbles appear around the screen. It literally looks like a comic book page being brought to life, hopefully there are more shots like that in the film.
Sony gets a lot of criticism by fans with the way they have handled Spider-Man in the last couple of years. But to their credit they aren’t giving up on the property yet, especially with Venom coming out just a couple of months before this. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Sony is taking this project in the right direction. I can’t wait to see the final product on the big screen. Sony deserves a lot of praise here especially if they knock it out the park with this one. I like how the cinematic version of the character can be loaned out to Marvel giving them the chance to work on their own universe. I love how they aren’t just sitting on their hands watching the success of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU. This allows them to choose their own path and really just bring the comic books to life. It’s much easier for them to bring in characters such as Spider-Gwen for the first time. I can’t wait to see what other characters will also appear in this film.
One of the biggest reasons why I’m looking forward to this movie is because the focus here is on a different Spider-Man. Miles Morales was a great choice for this project and a great starting point for the character to be introduced to the general audience who hasn’t read any of his comics. However given this movie is about the ‘Spider-Verse’ we will see other version of the character such as Spider-Gwen and Peter Parker. While it looks like Peter is teaching Miles the ropes I feel the main focus of the film will be centred on Miles and his family which I love. This is a breath a fresh air for the character in general. Don’t get me wrong Peter Parker will always be my favourite but I’m all for passing the torch to a new character.
That was my quick thoughts on ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ and how it could be one of the biggest surprises of the year. It looks like I’m not the only one that’s excited about this film as the trailer has gained over 40 million views in the space of a couple days. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here but it does look like they have all the right ingredients to make a great Spider-Man movie.
‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ is set to be released December, 14
