Venom: Trailer Review

As expected the new Venom trailer dropped today. I’m trying not to get carried away here but this is easily the best trailer they have dropped so far. Yesterday I said this film would either make or break the film in terms of people deciding if they’re actually going to watch it in October. And the early responses I’m see to the trailer have been positive for the most part. With each trailer the reception to the upcoming film continues to improve but that could just be me and the people I follow on Twitter. We’ll get our real answer in October with how many people actually go out and see the movie during its opening weekend.

The main thing I wanted from this trailer was to see more Venom. Now of course that seems obvious right? But given the character is so reliant on special effects I was worried about the CGI not being finished yet. Luckily I got exactly what I hoped for with this trailer as there was plenty of Venom in this trailer for me. Firstly his design is great! He looks like he just walked off the comic pages (yes I know he doesn’t have the white spider on his chest). As the trailers have been released you can see how they’re slowly updating his design. I love how Venom is getting more defined with the addition of the white veins on the Symbiote. The way Venom moves around is done well and of course it helps differentiate himself from Spider-Man. However, with all the praise I’ve given this trailer so far there is one major problem I have with it. And it seems like I may not be the only one who had this problem. At certain parts in the trailer I found it really hard to understand what Venom was saying! For example the scene at the end where Venom is about to eat that guy in the convenience store. I had to re-watch this scene multiple times just to understand what he was saying. Maybe Tom Hardy’s just having bad luck with these type of roles. Hopefully it doesn’t end up turning into a similar situation with what we saw in The Dark Knight Rises. Just to refresh your memory after early test screenings Christopher Nolan went back and made Tom Hardy re-record his lines because audiences were struggling to understand what he was saying. With the release of Venomonly around the corner this might have to be something the studio considers. But then again I did see some people saying they had no issue with his voice and they understood everything he said.

As for the plot of the movie director Ruben Fleischer has said the movie will be heavily influenced by the Leathal Protector storyline. The comic has a group of Symbiotes which consists of ScreamPhageRiotLasher and Agony. At this point we’ve only seen 3 Symbiotes (excluding Venom). I can’t see them including all of the Symbiotes from the Lethal Protector storyline because at some point it will just become overkill. We aren’t sure yet as to how Eddie comes in contact with the Symbiote. But it’s clear that Riz Ahmed’s character (Dr. Carlton Drake) has multiple Symbiotes in his possession. Does Eddie volunteer to be tested or does Dr. Carlton force him to? Clearly we can see from the trailer Dr. Carlton has been experimenting on other people with the Symbiote as he looks to create this new race of species. At one point in the film Dr. Carlton will experiment with a Symbiote on himself in hopes to takedown Eddie Brock. Dr. Carlton’s Symbiote is called Riot. For months it has been rumoured that Carnage will be the main villain of the movie. Now it’s clear they’re holding off with Carnage and are planning on brining him in later on. I wouldn’t be surprised if we catch our first glimpse of Carnage during the post credits scene.

I wouldn’t be worried about these trailers showing too much of the movie already. I believe the majority of what we have seen so far takes place within the first 45 minutes of the film. They haven’t shown us a lot of Eddie’s relationship with Anne Weying (played by Michelle Williams). And to be honest I’m really looking forward to spending time with Eddie Brock without the Symbiote. He has never came across as a super interesting character to me but the casting of Tom Hardy already looks to be a great choice with the way he is portraying Eddie. In particular I love the early dynamics of Eddie trying to fight off the Symbiote as it takes control over his actions. Surprisingly the trailer actually had a few comedic spots which I wasn’t expecting at all. It just shows that while this is going to be a dark film, it’ll also be a film where you can at least expect to have some fun.

My Thoughts On The Shazam! Trailer

Now I can’t lie although I thought the Aquaman trailer was amazing I found myself enjoying the Shazam! trailer a lot more. This is not a knock to the Aquaman trailer or James Wan, I just find myself replaying the Shazam! trailer more than the Aquaman one. To be honest I was already sold on Aquaman before the trailer was even released. I know what James Wan is capable of and the horror elements he would bring to Aquaman. Now Shazam! is an entirely different case to me. A kid who turns into a superhero with the mention of a single word sounds great on paper (hence the popularity of the character). But how would that work on the big screen? Especially in 2019? This was one of the biggest questions I had going into this trailer. And Sandberg along with the cast look go have got it spot on. I love everything about this trailer. The tone, humour and even the way its shot given its much smaller budget compared to the previous DCEU films. Now I’m not going to pretend like I’m the biggest Shazam/Captain Marvel fan ever but from what I know of the character they have done a good job at both respecting the past of the character while embracing the more recent iterations of Shazam with the New 52 run.

Zachary Levi looks great in the suit and plays the whole inner-child aspect of the character really well. Granted we can see that the suit is padded and Zachary Levi clearly isn’t that big but it feels like they did it on purpose, it fits the tone of the movie. While Zachary Levi will play the most important role in the movie the child actors that were picked here are the real stars of the trailer for me. Asher makes a great Billy Batson in my opinion and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman was involved in my favourite moments from the trailer. I just feel like he does a great job at representing us comic fans and how we would react if we find out our foster brother had superpowers.

I’ve seen people complain about the trailer potentially showing too much of the movie already. I’m guessing the majority of what they showed in the trailer takes place within the first 30/45 minutes of the movie. While I want to see Billy running around using his powers I also want to see the struggles he goes through as he’s trying to find that family structure in his life. But when he does discover his powers in the trailer that’s when the fun begins. Those training montages are great I can’t wait to see more of them. My favourite part of the trailer is the robbery scene where Shazam finds out he’s bulletproof. Freddy’s reaction in this scene makes it for me, you can tell him and Zachary have great chemistry on screen. We only caught a glimpse of Mark Strong’s Doctor Sivana and I’m expecting us to see a lot more of him in the second trailer. This just shows how they haven’t given away too much with this trailer.

Overall while the character of Shazam is familiar to me this trailer makes me want to go back and start reading through his comics. I think New Line Cinema could potentially have a gem on their hands with this movie. They really need to go full force with the marketing of the film. If done right and this trailer is a great start I think Shazam could reach the same level of popularity as the rest of the Justice League members in the cinematic universe. Speaking of cinematic universes I love how both Aquaman and Shazam! are completely movies in terms of style and tone but they still exist in the same universe. One day I hope we get to see Billy and Freddy interact with the Justice League in the future.

My Thoughts On The Aquaman Trailer

aq-cc-screencaps-73

My expectations for this trailer were so high to the point where I felt worried about being let down by it in the end. Thankfully James Wan really blew it out of the water with this trailer(pun intended). This 2 and a half minute trailer was enough to satisfy fans like me who have been waiting for an Aquaman movie for years.

During the promotion run for this trailer people who visited the set compared this film to blockbusters such as Star WarsBlade Runner and Lord of the Rings. And we saw all of these influences in the trailer. I’ve seen people complain about the use of CGI in this film and it blows my mind. Of course, this film would need to heavily rely on CGI, 2/3’s of the film is going to be underwater after all. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to make a live action underwater film look realistic. And to be honest they haven’t gone down the realistic route with this film. They have fully embraced that this is a comic book movie which pulls from multiple genres such as sci-fi and adventure. Visually the trailer is stunning and Atlantis looks even better than it did on the comic pages. There are some shots where the CGI looks choppy but that’s to be expected at this early stage. James Wan and his VFX team still have several months to perfect these shots.

As for the plot I love how Arthur is seen as an outsider now because he grew up on the surface, almost fully embracing his human side. The story of him coming home after Orm has taken over goes with the movie’s tagline “Home is calling“. It just shows that no matter how much time he spends on the surface world Atlantis is still his true home and I think we’ll see him struggle with the responsibilities he has on both the surface and underwater. Orm already looks like he’s going to be a General Zod level main villain. Patrick Wilson was a great choice for Orm and he has been provided with a really interesting character who will be a great match for Arthur and even someone we could sympathise with at points during the film given his motivations. The climax of the film looks to be an epic battle between Orm and Arthur involving their opposing armies and once again the visuals of the war scenes look amazing. My personal highlight from the trailer is finally getting to see a live action version of Black Manta. The suit looks incredible and Yahya looks great without the helmet on too. I felt like we didn’t get to see enough of him but that’s understandable since Orm is the main villain and Black Manta is being built up to star in multiple movies.

Overall I loved the trailer and it was the perfect appetiser for what’s to come in this underwater adventure. Remember this was only the first trailer, there’s still so much that we haven’t seen yet.

First Official Look At ‘Shazam!’

With SDCC right around the corner I was expecting us to get our first official look at Shazam! during the Warner Bros. panel. However, the studio are looking to start the hype train early by giving us our first look at Shazam! After months of behind the scenes shots and leaked promotional images we finally have our first look at the character. Entertainment Weekly has provided us with a still from the upcoming movie which features both Shazam! and Freddy Freeman (Billy Batson’s best friend). Comparing this shot the ones that leaked from the set I straightaway noticed some changes that they made to the suit. Firstly, the boots are completely different, the gauntlets look more detailed along with the belt.

Screen Shot 2018-07-11 at 18.23.26.png

Director David Sandberg talking to Entertainment Weekly went into detail about the suit:

“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman,”

Just like with every comic book movie directors try their best to respect the past while embracing the present and David Sandberg has shown that with the addition of the hood on the suit which is influenced by the Golden Age comics:

“It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”

Personally I love this image, it really captures the tone of the film. Shazam! will be a much lighter film compared to the previous entries in the DCEU. Everyone involved in the project seemed to have a lot of fun shooting this movie and I can’t wait to see what they bring with them to SDCC. My prediction is that we’ll get a teaser trailer next week along with some more official images. Mind you we still haven’t seen what Shazam! will look like when all the VFX are applied to the character.

Synopsis for Shazam!

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”

Shazam is set to be released 5 April 2019

Djimon Hounsou To Play The Wizard In Shazam!

Still-of-Wizard-from-Shazam-DC-Comics

Filming for the Shazam! movie has been completed for a couple of months now.

But that hasn’t stopped updates surrounding the project from surfacing as we learned today. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly it has been reported that Djimon Hounsou will now be playing the role of the Wizard in the project.

This news came as a shock to many fans because the last we heard of the Wizard in the Shazam! movie how he was going to be portrayed by Ron Cephas Jones. However that has now changed with Hounsou (who is most recently known for his role as Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy) jumping into the DC universe.

Ironically he will be starring in both the Captain Marvel (the original name or Shazam!) and Shazam! films next year. The Wizard plays an important role in the titular characters mythology, he’s the main reason why Billy gets his powers. I can’t help but think if anyone else could be making a surprise appearance in this film given how this news was kept under the radar for a long time.

Djimon Hounsou will be joining the likes of Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Ross Butler, Asher Angel and many more in Shazam!

Shazam! will be released on 5 April 2019

The Rock Provides Update On Black Adam Movie And Teases Potential Cameos

The busiest man in Hollywood has found time in his already jam-packed schedule to talk about one of his future projects. The Rock in an interview with Filmstarts to promote his film Skyscraper ended up talking about the Black Adam movie which he is set to star in for a while now. Fans have been starved of any type of information surrounding this highly anticipated movie but today The Rock shed some light on when he hopes they can start shooting it along with some potential cameos that could feature in the film.

When questioned on the possibility of the project starting production next year The Rock responded:

“With Black Adam, I don’t think we’re going to start early next year.”

He also went on to say:

“Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that, if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it.”

One piece of information The Rock revealed about the film that should get fans excited is how he hinted at potential cameos from other DC characters in the Black Adam movie:

“Without giving anything away, there MIGHT be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes,”

However The Rock doesn’t want to get our hopes up as he claims Black Adam is a character that can fully stand by himself in his solo movie:

“We’ll see. That’s been the beauty of Black Adam as we’ve been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that’s also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.”

Just by reading this interview I think it’s pretty clear that they are planning to include other DC characters in this movie. Straightaway the two characters that jumped into my mind when I saw this headline were Superman and Shazam. As for The Rock himself I’m really happy he’s attached to the project. He’s been a fan of Black Adam for a long time and it shows every time he talks about the project. As he has stated before:

“I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I’ve just loved that backstory. I think that Black Adam has always been, to me, the most intriguing superhero.”

With the popularity of comic book movies today I think this movie will both benefit him and DC. We know what The Rock can do, at times even as a fan it feels like he’s playing the same role again and again. This Black Adam movie will be a great opportunity for him to really display his acting talents in my opinion.

The Rock’s future projects:

Fighting with My Family – 2019

Hobbs & Shaw – 2019

Jumanji Sequel – 2019

Red Notice – (Production 2019/Release: TBA)

Black Adam – Production (potentially 2019 release 2020/21?)

Who would you like to see show up in the Black Adam movie?

Confirmed: Joaquin Phoenix To Play The Joker In Standalone Film

The standalone Joker movie has been picking up steam behind the scenes ever since it was first reported on last year. A standalone Joker movie that didn’t feature Jared Leto seemed far fetched at first given how studios like to build universes in a linear fashion. But Warner Bros. has decided to expand their DC universe by pretty much creating another one. This will allow them to produce these standalone movies that aren’t connected in anyway to the DC Extended Universe that we know so well. The biggest question surrounding this Joker movie was if Jared Leto isn’t going to be the Joker then who will? For as much as this project has been reported on there were only two names that were linked to the iconic Joker role, they were Joaquin Phoenix and Leonardo Dicaprio. Today it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Joaquin Phoenix will now star as the Joker in the movie with Todd Phillips directing. The standalone Joker movie is set to follow in the same footsteps as the Birds of Prey movie by using a much smaller budget compared to the recent DC films. THR has estimated that the standalone Joker movie will have a budget of $55 million.

As for the story itself it has already been revealed that this film will follow the work of Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. The film will be set in the 80s and it will be focusing on the Joker’s life prior to what has made him one of the greatest villains ever. The film will follow the journey of a failed comedian just like in the iconic graphic novel. The most important thing to take away from this scoop today is how the studio are looking to start shooting the film in September this year. We might not have to wait that long before we see this movie on the big screen. THR claimed it’s possible that it could be set for a late 2019 release.
