Confirmed: Joaquin Phoenix To Play The Joker In Standalone Film

The standalone Joker movie has been picking up steam behind the scenes ever since it was first reported on last year. A standalone Joker movie that didn’t feature Jared Leto seemed far fetched at first given how studios like to build universes in a linear fashion. But Warner Bros. has decided to expand their DC universe by pretty much creating another one. This will allow them to produce these standalone movies that aren’t connected in anyway to the DC Extended Universe that we know so well. The biggest question surrounding this Joker movie was if Jared Leto isn’t going to be the Joker then who will? For as much as this project has been reported on there were only two names that were linked to the iconic Joker role, they were Joaquin Phoenix and Leonardo Dicaprio. Today it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Joaquin Phoenix will now star as the Joker in the movie with Todd Phillips directing. The standalone Joker movie is set to follow in the same footsteps as the Birds of Prey movie by using a much smaller budget compared to the recent DC films. THR has estimated that the standalone Joker movie will have a budget of $55 million.

As for the story itself it has already been revealed that this film will follow the work of Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. The film will be set in the 80s and it will be focusing on the Joker’s life prior to what has made him one of the greatest villains ever. The film will follow the journey of a failed comedian just like in the iconic graphic novel. The most important thing to take away from this scoop today is how the studio are looking to start shooting the film in September this year. We might not have to wait that long before we see this movie on the big screen. THR claimed it’s possible that it could be set for a late 2019 release.

Aquaman Promotion Provides First Look At Major Characters

Fans like myself have been itching to see some kind of content from the upcoming Aquaman film. Although it’s only 6 months away it feels like we’ve been waiting for an eternity. But with the film only being 6 months away and SDCC only around the corner this was the perfect time to start the promotion train for the film. Today it was revealed that Aquaman will feature on the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly. Aquaman will be following in the tradition of the other DC films that have covered the magazine such as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. Usually I wouldn’t write about a story like this but the feature actually provides a lot of interesting information and stills from the film. This week’s edition of Entertainment Weekly provides us with our first look at the likes of Orm, Black Manta and Queen Atlanna.

Here are the shots of the cover that feature Arthur, Mera and Queen Atlanna:

The other shot that was released of Queen Atlanna features her and Arthur as a kid. Although Aquaman is a set after the events of Justice League we should expect to see some flashback scenes to when Arthur was a child.

Orm and Black Manta

One thing I was looking forward to the most was how the costumes with characters such as Orm (Ocean Master) and Black Manta were handled. With Justice League we know how Aquaman and Mera will look like for the most part but the villains of the movie is a different case. Both characters look great! I especially love the design of their headwear. While we don’t get the full picture of Orm’s equipment it does look to be accurate with the source material. This can definitely be said about Black Manta’s helmet which looks like it has just jumped off the page.

While both villains are prominent in the film James Wan clarified in the interview that Orm (Arthur’s brother) is the main villain of the film:

“Black Manta is a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story but our main story is about Jason and Patrick,”

Screen Shot 2018-06-15 at 02.02.49

James Wan on Black Manta’s background and costume:

“He’s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space,”

No speech bubbles

This was something that was confirmed by James Wan on Twitter shortly after the release of Justice League but in this interview he explains it further. Fans were not happy with how the scenes in Atlantis were handled in Justice League whenever someone talked. In the scene with Mera and Arthur a bubble would appear which allowed them to talk. It didn’t bother me too much but it also didn’t look that great at the same time. James Wan has gone on to reassure fans that this won’t happen in the Aquaman movie:

Wan said, “People are overthinking it.” The director added that Aquaman’s characters are “just gonna talk!”  According to EW, the approach to talking underwater is “brilliantly simple and naturalistic-looking solution.”

Synopsis for Aquaman:

“Following the events of Justice League, Arthur Curry, the reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, is caught in a battle between surface dwellers that threaten his oceans and his own people, who are ready to lash out and invade the surface.”

It’s also been rumoured that a trailer for Aquaman should be dropping sooner than expected. If that doesn’t happen we’re only one month away from SDCC so don’t get too disappointed.

Aquaman is set to be released 21, December

Geoff Johns To Write/Produce Green Lantern Corps Movie

The Green Lantern Corps movie could be one of the most important movies of the DC universe. If done right they could really strike lightning in a bottle which will blow the cinematic universe wide open. There are endless possibilities in how to approach this character and the universe that comes long with it. Luckily it won’t be up to me that’s now the job of Geoff Johns. Today it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Johns would step down from his role as executive at DC Comics into a new one. Geoff Johns has signed a writer-producer deal with the studio letting him have influence over the movies in the DC universe. Johns has already contributed to Aquaman, Shazam and both Wonder Woman movies. Now we have to add the highly anticipated Green Lantern Corps movie to that list. Geoff Johns is set to both write and produce the movie. This is a field in which he has a lot of experience in, comic book fans like myself and around the world love his runs on Green Lantern. They can only hope that he brings some of what he done on the page to the big screen.

Johns also launched his own production company which is called ‘Mad Ghost Productions’. The site is already up and it details his current and previous projects. It already has the basic description for the Green Lantern Corps movie and it states:

Once of DC Comics’ greatest Super Hero universes, the film will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart…

As of now both Hal and John are confirmed for the film which is great news. But the beauty with the Green Lantern Corps movie is that they don’t have to focus on one or two members, there are hundreds to choose from. And I believe Johns is the right person be in charge of this project. I’ve seen people bring up his involvement with the previous Green Lantern movie and yes that film was a mess. However there were a lot of things that went wrong with that movie other than Johns’ ‘co-producer’ role. Clearly you can see Johns is currently and will play a crucial role in the future of the DC cinematic universe.

As a DC fan I’m happy with this news and wish him the best of luck!

Jared Leto To Get Standalone Joker Movie

A solo Joker movie is something that is clearly high up on the list of priorities in the boardrooms of Warner Bros. It was reported a couple of months ago that the studio were developing a solo Joker movie but with a different actor. While it was never confirmed there were reports of the studio talking to Joaquin Phoenix for the role. It was even reported at some point that a script would be submitted soon and production would start later this year. As if fans weren’t confused enough with this potential Joker movie Variety today has reported that the studio are developing a solo Joker movie starring Jared Leto. This movie is set to take place within a universe which consists of the characters form Suicide Squad. I’m all for Jared Leto getting another chance with the Joker role but a whole movie? I thought this would have been a perfect opportunity to put him as the main villain for the Suicide Squad sequel, learning from their previous mistakes. Suicide Squad 2 is still in development and according to reports it should go into production later this year. It will be interesting to see his role in this film. As for what I would prefer? I rather go with Leto’s Joker playing a more prominent role in Suicide Squad 2. I can’t lie though a solo Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, produced by Martin Scorsese set in the 80’s does sound like a great idea. But I think ultimately they need to set their sights on one solid idea. I mean there are more characters in the DC universe that deserve this kind of priority.

Rumour: Penguin To Be The Main Villain In ‘The Batman’

The Batman movie which will be directed by Matt Reeves is slowly becoming one of the most anticipated comic book movies ever. One question that has been on the minds of Batman fans like myself is “Who are they going to pick as the main villain?”. Batman to this day still has one of the strongest rogues gallery when it comes to main villains. Matt Reeves is really spoilt for choice when it comes to picking the main villain for this film. while we haven’t had much information on the film so far Justin Kroll who is pretty reliable might have just revealed the main villain for The Batman movie.

The last time we saw the Penguin on the big screen was back in 1992 with Batman Returns. Penguin would make a formidable opponent for Batman even if he doesn’t look like it. Depending on how the character will be portrayed Cobblepot is someone that can grow to have extensive political influence along with his wealth. One thing to note is Penguin usually surrounds himself with henchmen. I bring this up because it will be interesting to see if they pair him up with another villain. Could we possibly see the Penguin and the Riddler team up against Batman. If not you could also throw the likes of Hugo Strange or Black Mask in the mix. Just the thought of pairing up these villains against Batman has me excited. Now as for who would play the Penguin I’ve seen some fans mention Josh Gad names which I would be fine with. But as we know with the DCEU as Justin Kroll states they could changed plans tomorrow. We just have to be patient, this movie will be ready when Matt Reeves feels like it’s ready.

Here’s a brief background on Cobblepot (via. Wikipedia)

The Penguin is a master criminal who aspires to be wealthy, powerful and respected (or at least feared) by Gotham’s high society. The Penguin’s wealth gives him access to better resources than most other Batman villains, and he is able to mix with Gotham’s elite, especially those he plans to target in his future crimes. He is also capable of returning to his luxurious lifestyle very easily despite his violent criminal history and prison record. He has even attempted multiple times to enter the political world, even launching expensive election campaigns. The Penguin also has strong connections with other criminal kingpins across Gotham, allowing him to hire their assassins and workers or to spy on them easily. The Penguin relies on cunning, wit, and intimidation to exploit his surroundings for profit, and despite his short temper, he is normally depicted as being more rational and sane than other Batman villains, or at least relatively so.

Although he often delegates the dirty work to his henchmen, he is not above taking aggressive and lethal actions on his own, especially when provoked. In spite of his appearance and stature, he is a dangerous hand-to-hand combatant with enough self-taught skills in judo, fencing, ninjutsu and bare-knuckle boxing to overwhelm attackers many times his size and physical bearing. The Penguin is usually portrayed as a capable physical combatant when he feels the situation calls for it, but his level of skill varies widely depending on the author; the character has been written both as a physical match for Batman and as someone the masked vigilante is capable of defeating with a solid punch. His crimes often revolve around stealing valuable bird-related items and his car and other vehicles often have an avian theme

Do you think the Penguin would make a great main villain for The Batman movie?

Chris Pine Spotted On The Set Of Wonder Woman Sequel

6036458-8285182910-5ccec8277a5ca472199e1d941fdec23b

The sequel for the highly anticipated Wonder Woman movie is about to start shooting. While Wonder Woman herself (Gal Gadot) will obviously return there’s one character that looks set to be returning which has left many fans scratching their heads. A couple of months ago a production sheet for the Wonder Woman sequel leaked. One thing that stood out from the cast list was that Chris Pine’s name was present. Now the document was never proved to be a real or a fake but leaked set photos would prove that this leak was right. I can’t post the images and videos of Chris on set here but believe me it’s real footage and he’s present on set. You can just do a quick Google and see for yourself.

Now what has fans confused of course is how Steve Trevor died at the end of Wonder Woman. It would be understandable for the character to return if the sequel was set before the first movie. But it has been confirmed that the sequel will be set in the 1980s which just raises further questions about his role and purpose in this movie. I believe his character will be used for flashback scenes at best. I’ve also seen some theories from fans online stating Steve Trevor could be used as an illusion against Wonder Woman. I hope his character has a minor role in the movie. As much as I loved Steve Trevor in the first movie I don’t want to see him return to be honest. I felt the way they handled his death was great, I loved his final scene with Diana. Bringing him back would hurt everything that I love about the scene especially its emotional impact.

But hey that’s just my opinion, you may feel differently.

Let me know your thoughts on Steve Trevor’s return down below.

The Synopsis For Avengers 4 Revealed

If you’re still recovering from the events of Avengers: Infinity War I don’t blame you, you’re not alone there. But there’s also this little movie coming out next year called Avengers 4 which will pick up after the events of Infinity War. While it hasn’t been confirmed as a part two it has to be considering the way Infinity War ended. We don’t have the official title for Avengers 4 yet as the Russos are still keeping it under wraps but today the synopsis for the movie has been revealed in Licensing Magazine

The official synopsis for Avengers 4 is:

“A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth instalment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is, and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”

This is worrying because it clearly states that some sacrifices will have to be made and I believe this time for real. Some Avengers are going to die for good in this movie with my main prediction being Cap. The “turning point” in the synopsis could be describing how the Avengers will have to go back in time through the Quantum Realm which is just my guess from the set photos that have already surfaced. If they’re going with the time travel route there will have to be consequences for going back in time.

Let me know your thoughts on the synopsis for Avengers

Krypton Renewed For Second Season

The first season of Krypton has been a welcomed addition to the world of DC shows currently on television. As a huge Superman fan I have to admit at first I wasn’t completely sold on the concept of exploring the life of Superman’s grandfather in this technologically advanced world. But I always wanted to see a spin off television series or film that centred heavily on Krypton mainly because of Man of Steel. So far I’ve found the series really interesting and produced well, especially when it comes to the visual effects. It’s such a breath of fresh air compared to the other superhero TV shows which are currently running. So the news that he show had been renewed for a second season was a welcomed surprise to me. I have to admit in the midst of the recent controversies surrounding shows such as Gotham and Lucifer I was worried about Krypton’s future. Now that it has been renewed for a second season the world of Krypton can only get bigger. They have already introduced General Zod, Brainiac and now Doomsday in the first season. Where do they go with the season season? Do they introduce Justice League members? They referenced the Green Lantern Corps this season too. I have no idea where they go next but at the moment I’m just enjoying the ride and I can’t help but be excited about the return of Krypton next year

The season one finale of Krypton “The Phantom Zone” is set to air tomorrow night

Have you been watching Krypton?

If so what do you think os the series so far?

First Official Look At Shazam!

For months fans have been waiting to see the first official look at Shazam in costume. While we have been graced with set photos already it’s get the full picture when it comes to a character such as Shazam who needs a lot of VFX done in post because of his abilites. I was one of the many who couldn’t wait to get our first official look at Shazam as I was expecting it to be revealed at SDCC tin July during Warner Bros. panel but Zachary Levi (Shazam himself) had other ideas.

Zachary Levi took to Instagram to give us our first look at Shazam with a promotional image for the film:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Just by looking at this image if you’ve never read a Shazam/Captain Marvel comic you can see that this film will have a much lighter tone. After all this is a kid inside the body of a superhero and I believe this image captures that well. With the way Zachary Levi interacts with fans on Twitter I can really see him pulling off this role, he comes across as a kid himself too with how excited he is about this film. One thing I wanted to point out if you look closely right next to Zachary Levi you can see the arm of someone holding a trident. My initial reaction says it’s Aquaman since this was a Licensing Expo which featured Warner Bros. other properties such as Wonder Woman and Fantastic Beasts. It would make sense to put Aquaman next to Shazam. The promotion for James Wan’s Aquaman movie should be starting soon since the film is 7 months away. Overall things are looking promising as a DC fan I’m hearing nothing but good things about Shazam, Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2.

Shazam is personally one of my most anticipated comic book movies, I can’t wait to see what David Sandberg has done with this childlike superhero next year.

Shazam is set to be released 5 April, 2019

Jake Gyllenhaal In Talks To Play Mysterio In Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel

Mysterio-Spider-Man-Marvel-Comics-h409_1200_616_81_s

For months it seemed like whenever Jake Gyellenhaal’s name was brought he was constantly linked with replacing Ben Affleck for the role of Batman. Now it seems Gyellenhaal is finally joining the superhero universe but not to play the Caped Crusader but for a more villainous role as Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming sequel. It was reported just a couple of minutes ago by The HollyWood Reporter that he’s talks for the role with nothing confirmed yet. With the sequel looking to start production sometime this summer I do believe this will be confirmed sooner rather than later. They must have been talking for sometime and who knows the deal could have already been done, you never know with Hollywood. Even if the deal breaks down somehow what it does confirm is the studio are using Mysterio as the main villain for the film. We have already seen the Vulture be introduced with the first movie and now with Mysterio they have already made up two of the members of the iconic Sinister Six. It does look like they’re eventually building up to the Sinister Six as that was Sony’s initial plan with the Garfield movies but we most likely won’t seen the Sinister Six on the big screen until the third of fourth Spider-Man movie.

Here’s just a brief history between Spider-Man and Mysterio in the comics who also goes by the name Quentin Beck:

Debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #13, Mysterio is Quentin Beck, a special effects wizard and stunt man working for a major Hollywood studio with dreams of making a name for himself in the film industry. However, he came to see his career in special effects as a dead-end job. His attempts to become an actor were poorly received, but he realized that his expertise in illusions could make him an effective supervillain.

In his first battle with Spider-Man, after he frames Spider-Man for robbing the Midtown Museum, Mysterio obstructs the hero’s spider-sense with gas and dissolves Spider-Man’s webbing with a chemical abrasive. However Spider-Man tricks Mysterio into revealing he robbed the museum, then Spider-Man revealed he had captured it on tape. Mysterio was then jailed, blaming Spider-Man for his ruined career. Mysterio later joins the Sinister Six in an attempt at revenge on Spider-Man, and battles him using robots of the X-Men. After this Spider-Man gets a card that enables him to go on to battle Sandman.

Mysterio later creates the alias of world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Ludwig Rinehart, using technology and hypnosis in an attempt to make Spider-Man lose his mind, and nearly convincing him to unmask, though ironically Spider-Man was helped by J. Jonah Jameson suddenly bursting into the house. Spider-Man then unmasked Mysterio.

What this news also means is that the rumours surrounding Ben Affleck being replaced by Jake Gyellenhaal will also stop, thanfully. So this should actually be good news to anyone who wants to see Ben Affleck continue playing the role of the Batman.

The sequel to Spider-Man Homecoming is set to be released next year on July 5, 2019
