Four of the Most Iconic Characters with Super-Human abilities

Some of our favourite movie and entertainment characters have hidden gifts, but many of these have been progressed and aided by science. Genetically engineered to be heroes, villains, or just an experiment gone wrong, we have pulled together a list of iconic characters altered by science. We’ve also included a sneak-peak on the super-soldier character Deathstroke, ahead of the release of Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons on Blu-Ray™ and DVD this Monday 17th August.

Spider-Man

When Peter Parker was accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider at a science exhibit, he acquired the agility and strength of an arachnid. This meant Peter now had heightened athletic abilities, allowing him to climb walls and ceilings, leading him to become “Spider-Man”. Spider-Man is now possibly the most iconic genetically altered character, originally created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and now having several Spider-Man dedicated films, as well as being part of the Avengers.

Deathstroke

Another comic book character enhanced by science is Deathstroke. After being chosen for a secret experiment, Slade Wilson was transformed into a super-soldier by the army. During the experiment, the army imbued him with adrenaline serums, to enhance his brain activity. This left him with an incredible range of powers, notably accelerated healing meaning he can heal wounds in just minutes, making him the ultimate soldier. In addition, Slade’s incredible new powers included: decelerated aging, toxic immunity, enhanced senses and superhuman agility, durability, speed, reflexes, stamina and strength.

Eleven

Eleven is one of the main protagonists of popular Netflix sci-fi drama Stranger Things, after she arrives in Hawkins following her escape from Hawkins National Laboratory. Eleven found herself in the laboratory after being kidnapped for testing when it was discovered she had inherited psychokinetic abilities, with scientists attempting to enhance her abilities over several years through sensory experiments. Eleven’s powers include the ability to move objects with her mind, ranging to turning electronics on and off, breaking glass and throwing large objects. During the series, it is discovered Eleven’s powers can be trained to go even deeper, when she realises she could contact a creature from another dimension.

The Hulk

The Hulk is well known for his giant green appearance, however, this isn’t how he’s always seen. Hulk is actually Bioscience genius Dr. Bruce Banner who, after working on a program to develop weapons for the military, tested what he had learned on himself. This triggered a transformation that resulted in him becoming the immense, hulking figure we know today. When fuelled by rage, Banner transforms into The Hulk’s powers, prompting abilities including superhuman strength, long distance jumping, durability, and regeneration, alongside genius intelligence. He also can “Hulk Smash”, whereby slamming his hands together, he can create a massive concussive wave.

Go behind the mask and into the deep backstory of one of DC’s most revered anti-heroes in Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons. A new entry in the popular series of DC Animated Movies, Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons offers a new take on the Deathstroke legacy. Mercenary and master assassin Slade Wilson leads two lives: one as the relentless killer known as Deathstroke, and the other as a dedicated family man. When these worlds collide, forced together by the vicious terror group known as H.I.V.E., it is the killer in Slade who must fight to save his loved ones, as well as what remains of himself. With his soul torn apart and his young son held captive, Deathstroke will have to atone for the sins of his past to fuel the battles of his future!

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Michael Chiklis (The Shield, The Commish, American Horror Story: Freak Show) headlines the cast as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, alongside Sasha Alexander (Rizzoli & Isles, Shameless, NCIS) as Wilson’s wife, Adeline “Addie” Kane Wilson.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons gives DC Animated Movies’ their first true look into the complicated backstory of one of DC’s most controversial characters – Deathstroke is sometimes villain, sometimes anti-hero, and always deadly,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President, Originals, Animation and Family Marketing. “Michael Chiklis does an incredible job capturing the ruthless approach and conflicted internal struggles of Deathstroke.”

Reasons Why Deathstroke Will Become Your Favourite DC Character

To celebrate the upcoming release of Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons on digital download August 4th and DVD & Blu-Ray™ August 17th, we wanted to let you know a little more about one of DC’s lesser known characters.

Having appeared in comic books and TV series before, Deathstroke (AKA Slade Wilson) now appears front and centre in this new DC Animation, giving us a chance to see him in all his glory.

Here are all the reasons we think he’s pretty awesome and personally one of my DC characters!

An Indestructible Soldier

One of the most extraordinary dimensions of Deathstroke are his remarkable abilities, which were given to him after he was chosen for a secret experiment where the army hoped to transform him into a super-soldier. During the operation, the army imbued him with adrenaline serums, to enhance his brain activity. This left him with an incredible range of powers, notably accelerated healing meaning he can heal wounds in just minutes, making him the ultimate soldier. In addition, Slade’s incredible new powers included: decelerated aging, toxic immunity, enhanced
senses and superhuman agility, durability, speed, reflexes, stamina and strength.

A Knight in Shining Armour

Another reason why Deathstroke is slightly different from other DC supervillains, is his morality. Deathstroke’s job as an assassin is largely based around seeking revenge on those who have caused harm to others. Even though his actions cause death and destructions, he truly believes he is using his super-soldier strength for good and what he is doing is right, often acting as a “Knight in Shining Armour”.

Another example of Deathstroke’s morality and core values is shown in Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons, where he risks everything and pushes his body to the limits to save his son and keep his family together. Deathstroke’s word is his bond, and you cannot get more genuine than that.

Badass Assassin

What more of a reason do you need to admire Deathstroke than the fact he is a straight up bad-ass assassin, never needing back up and always fighting solo. Despite his extra-ordinary body, Slade is also impressively talented in combat, after his training in the army, and is often called the “World’s Greatest Assassin”. “Deathstroke is sometimes villain, sometimes anti-hero, and always deadly,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President.

His Armour Has a Meaning

Deathstroke’s armour was carefully thought out by original character designers George Pérez and Marv Wolfman. His orange and black colour scheme portrays his personality, with the two colours reflecting the differences between his lighter and darker sides – the difference between Slade and Deathstroke. The dark side of the career but the morality of the man. Mercenary and master assassin Slade Wilson leads two lives: one as the relentless killer known as Deathstroke, and the other as a dedicated family man.

Deathstroke: Knight & Dragons will be available on digital download August 4th and DVD & Blu-Ray™ August 17th.

Expect to see my review for the film to come out shortly

Superman: Red Son – Out Now!

The latest instalment into the DC Animated Universe is here! With the huge event of Justice League: Dark Apokolips War on the horizon. It’s time for another Elseworlds story in the meantime to hold us over until then. Superman: Red Son (by Mark Millar) has been given the animated treatment by the ever present Sam Liu. If that name doesn’t ring a bell to you, it certainly should. Liu has made a huge contribution towards the DC Animated Universe with his previous works such as All Star Superman, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and most recently, last year’s Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.

I have been looking forward to this movie so much because not only is Superman my favourite comic book character, but this is also one of my favourite storylines ever. I’ve always loved the Elseworlds approach on certain characters and Superman is one of them. Because while he is rooted in Metropolis seeing him grow up and operate in an entirely different environment was fascinating when I first picked up the comic.

If you’re new to Superman: Red Son, here’s a brief summary of the story:

“In Red SonSuperman‘s rocket ship lands on a Ukrainian collective farm rather than in Kansas, an implied reason being a small time difference (a handful of hours) from the original timeline, meaning Earth’s rotation placed Ukraine in the ship’s path instead of Kansas. Instead of fighting for “… truth, justice, and the American Way,” Superman is described in Soviet radio broadcasts “… as the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact.”

Superman: Red Son is already available to purchase on Digital download as you read this. But if you’re like me and you love your physical media, you’re going to have to wait until 16 March, 2020 to purchase it on Blu-ray/DVD.

Justice League Home Release To Come With ‘Bonus Scenes’

Warner Bros. Justice League is set to be released on Blu-ray March 13th while the Digital HD release will arrive earlier on February 13th. Warner Bros. announced this news with a new mini trailer promoting the Blu-ray release date. What’s interesting to note from the trailer is that the Blu-ray is set to be released with ‘Bonus Scenes’ yes plural! By the end of the trailer we are teased with a bonus Superman scene. It’s hard to tell what is going on in this scene but speculation has led to fans thinking this is where Superman gets his suit back after his resurrection. That would make sense because that part was skipped over in the theatrical cut. No one really knows how he got his suit back, hopefully this will provide some answers. I will also be interested to see what other bonus scenes they will also include. Personally I would love to see more scenes with Aquaman in Atlantis which we didn’t get enough of in the theatrical cut. As of right now the studio hasn’t hinted at all of a ‘directors cut’ or ‘Zack Snyder cut’ being released in the near future.
