The Joker Trailer: First Impressions

As expected the trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joker movie arrived today. And to take a phrase from Heath Ledger’s Joker for a second…it didn’t disappoint. I mean where do I start with this one? Before the trailer even dropped I was fascinated with the idea of this movie. Now this is my most anticipated movie of the year. I love the whole vibe I’m getting from this movie. It’s dark, tragic, crazy and will most likely be full of dark humour. Just as a Joker movie should be.

Here are my main talking points from the trailer:

Beautifully shot

Joaquin Phoenix is getting a lot of praise as expected and rightly so. But I want to start this off by giving Todd Phillips and the rest of the crew behind the scenes some praise. The way the movie is shot caught my eye immediately. There are some amazing shots in this trailer and I think they did a good job at capturing the 80s. Plus the music they chose fits the tone of the movie/trailer perfectly.

Joaquin’s Joker

On to the main man himself Joaquin Phoenix. I’m trying not get carried away here, but I think he’s going to kill this role. It looks like he went all out for this role. His mannerisms and the presence he commands on screen with the full make up on. I was in awe the whole time. His Joker laugh is great too. Again, I’m trying not to get carried away here, but it feels like they made a great choice by picking him for this role.

Origin

The most interesting thing about this trailer to me is the way they’re approaching the Joker’s origin story. From the moment this movie was announced people were automatically turned off because the Joker is someone who doesn’t really have an origin. But what they’re doing with this movie. I’m all for it. I’m not one of these gatekeepers. If you’re going to do it, just do it well. The way the trailer starts by showing us Arthur caring for his mother and seeing what the character has become by the end of the trailer had me hooked. I want to see this journey the character goes on. I want to see him start off as someone we can sympathise with and then it just takes a sharp turn to where we aren’t meant to be rooting for this guy. We should hate him, but love him at the same time. At the end of the day he’s a bad guy. And he’s going to do some crazy shit to people in this movie, I can guarantee you that now. I also love how they’re focusing on mental illness in this movie, something a lot of people can relate to.

God, I cannot wait for this movie. I’ve already watched the trailer more than 10 times. And I love it even more with each watch.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the trailer:

Joker Trailer to be Released Tomorrow

What a day it has been for comic book fans like myself. Just as I finally got through and brought my tickets for Avengers: Endgame I get a notification on my phone saying director Todd Phillips has made a new post on his Instagram. Without hesitation I went to his page because I knew it would be something Joker related. Well, to my surprise it was more than that. Not only did Todd Phillips give us our first look at the poster for the movie, he also announced we’re getting a teaser trailer tomorrow!

Teaser trailer tomorrow. #JokerMovie

A post shared by Todd Phillips (@toddphillips1) on

Warner Bros. also created a Twitter account for the movie and provided us a promotional banner.

Shortly after I received a press release from Warner Bros. detailing the movie.

Check out the official synopsis for The Joker:

“Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen.  Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

One detail I found really interesting in the press release is how it states Robert De Niro is starring in the movie alongside Joaquin Phoenix. It looks like he’s going to have a major role in the movie. I honestly can’t wait for the trailer tomorrow.

Check back here tomorrow for my breakdown/reaction to the trailer.

Shazam! – Review (non-spoiler)

Shazam! is the latest entry into the DCEU. After the recent success of Aquaman all eyes turned to Billy Batson, a kid who can turn into a superhero by saying the word Shazam! Tasked with bringing Shazam to the big screen for the first time is David F. Sandberg. Most known for his horror background this would seem like an odd choice given Shazam’s character. But just like James Wan, David F. Sandberg proved he can adapt his style and produce a great superhero movie. Because that’s what Shazam! is at the end of the day. I had such a great time while watching this movie. My cheeks started to hurt because I found myself smiling so much. Shazam! is a movie full of heart that grabs you from minute one and takes you even further once Billy discovers his powers.

Family

One of the main reasons why this film resonated with me so much is the use of family as its theme. Billy from a young age not only struggles to fit in, but he has an even harder time trying to find a place he can call home. And throughout the movie it has him going back to his past to look for answers. I won’t spoil it, but I found some of these scenes really emotional. By the end of the movie it’s really nice to see how things turn out for him. You see how Billy changes over time, especially with how he treats people. Because at the beginning of the movie he’s not the nicest kid, but given his upbringing you can kind of sympathise with him. It’s just so satisfying once his character makes that change.

Perfect casting

I cannot praise the movie any further if I don’t give a special shoutout to the cast here. The movie works because of them. And you know what’s the best part about it? The majority of the main cast are kids! They’re going places after this movie. As for the main star Zachary Levi he’s just perfect in the role. I knew he was going to nail the role from the first trailer. He not only embodies this version of the character so well, but he makes if feel so realistic to me if that makes sense. I would totally be acting the same way he does in the movie if I found out I could become a superhero. He and Jack Dylan Grazer play off each other so well. Every time it was just them two on the screen together I wanted more. My favourite part in movie is once Billy gets his powers he takes Freddy along with him to discover what powers he actually has. This whole 10-15 minutes section of testing Shazam’s abilities is amazing and it works so well because of the chemistry between the actors. The rest of the kids who make up the foster family are great too. Faithe Herman as Darla was a standout too. Every time she was on the screen she got a positive reaction from the audience.

Dr. Sivana

Speaking of great casting Mark Strong as Dr. Sivana provides for an interesting main villain. Surprisingly, Dr. Sivana is actually given a lot of screen time compared to other villains in superhero movies. The movie actually opens with him. So not only are we following Billy’s journey we’re also following Dr. Sivana’s arc at the same time too. He’s isn’t a throwaway villain. The writers made sure that we understand why he took this route and the impact his upbringing had on him, just like with Billy. What I liked the most about Dr. Sivana is how he’s a genuine threat to Billy and the public. One of the best scenes in the movie involves Dr. Sivana in a boardroom. It’s straight up terrifying, clearly David F. Sandberg was channeling his horror roots in this scene. This scene really stands-out in the movie and it helps solidify Dr. Sivana as a formidable opponent for Shazam.

A lack of punch

With all the praise I’ve given to this movie so far it’s only right for me to bring up what I didn’t like about it because it’s not a perfect movie. Personally, I thought the action was just average. Not that it looked bad because given the lower budget I thought the CGI was fine throughout the movie. But the action scenes/fighting didn’t show me anything different. I was expecting more to be honest. And this ties in with another issue I have with the movie which is the third act/final fight. I thought it could have been a lot better. My main issues with it are that it had the same type of action as we saw throughout the movie and I felt like it went on for too long. Other than the action, humour is a major aspect of the movie. And while for the majority of the movie it worked there were times where a joke would take me out of the moment. At this point I might be nitpicking because 90% of the jokes landed for me. Plus there genuinely were some laugh out loud moments throughout.

Closing thoughts

Overall, even the flaws aren’t enough from stopping Shazam! being a special movie. It may not make a billion dollars like Aquaman, but I think Shazam! will win the hearts of many people. It won my heart. I love this movie and I can’t wait to see it again, along with a couple of sequels in the future. At a time where it may feel like we’re getting too many superhero movies and there may be some fatigue. Shazam! is a breath of fresh air to the genre. Do yourself a favour, go out and see this movie!

Shazam! will be released on April 5

Zack Snyder’s Original Justice League Plan

Over the past couple of days director Zack Snyder held a directors cut event for fans in California. The first two days consisted of watching the directors cuts for Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen. And for the last day Batman V Superman was screened as the event came to an end. Just like the previous two screenings this was also followed by a Q&A session and this is where things got kind of crazy. Of course the elephant in the room was addressed which is Justice League. Now the audience member didn’t ask something like “When are we going to see the Snyder Cut?”. But she questioned Zack’s original plans for the Justice League movie(s). Before we get into his response this is what we knew before about his Justice League arc thanks to Kevin Smith.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Trilogy

Art by @datrinti
  • Justice League Part 1: Justice League defeats Steppenwolf with appearance of Darkseid
  • Justice League Part 2: Justice League take the fight to Darkseid on Apokolips and they LOSE
  • Justice League Part 3: Takes place after Darkseid wins and is set in the Knightmare universe from BvS.

Last night Snyder went into more detail about the third movie which is set in the Knightmare timeline. We were under the impression from the Knightmare scene in BvS that Superman turned evil because he lost Lois Lane. But how did he lose Lois Lane? In the scene he clearly blames bruce as he says to him “She was my world and you took her from me”. Yesterday Snyder explained how Darkseid was the one who was going to kill Lois Lane in the Batcave, turing Superman’s world upside down. And this would lead to him blaming Bruce for everything that happened. It wasn’t specified but my guess would be that Superman became an agent for Darkseid with the Anti-Life equation playing a major role.

So the main thing to take away is Darkseid killing Lois triggers the whole post apocalyptic world. Snyder also went on to state that some of the Justice League members would have fallen in the process and it’s left up to Cyborg, Flash and Batman to correct everything. Cyborg and Batman help send Flash back in time to warn Bruce just like we saw in Batman v Superman. And what happens next? I guess we’ll never know. I hope the script for the original Justice League movie leaks one day. I know some people aren’t a fan of Snyder’s style, but one thing I admire about his movies is how he pushes the envelope. He doesn’t just go out to make ‘safe’ movies, he really tries to go above and beyond and I appreciate that. I would’ve loved to have seen how his whole vision played out.

Let me know your thoughts on this news down below.

P.S. If things went according to plan we probably would of had an Avengers movie and a Justice League movie use time travel in the same year. Crazy right?

What James Gunn’s Suicide Squad Could Look Like

Last week I said it felt like James Gunn’s Suicide Squad was picking up steam behind the scenes. And the events in the past 24 hours seem to be proving that correct. Following the news that Will Smith will not be returning to the sequel/reboot. Just last night it was reported that Idris Elba is set to replace Smith in the role. Today, Collider has provided us with more news about the upcoming movie by possibly revealing the new line up of the Suicide Squad. We already know Harley Quinn and Deadshot are going to be returning, but who will be joining them?

King Shark

Born in Hawaii, Nanaue is a humanoidshark, his father is “The King of all Sharks” — also known as the Shark God. Other characters, such as special agent Sam Makoa, have dismissed this as superstition and referred to Nanaue as a “savage mutation” with no mystical nature. It has also been implied he was one of the “Wild Men”, evolved animals based on those in Kamandi.

Ratcatcher

Ratcatcher is Otis Flannegan, a super-criminal and enemy to Batman. Beginning as an exterminator in Gotham City, he turned to crime and became a prisoner in Blackgate Penitentiary. He developed the ability to train and communicate with sewer rats, and began controlling an army of small rodents. In addition to this, he wears a gas mask and uses the poison gasses of a pest exterminator

Polka-Dot Man

The Polka-Dot Man, also known as Mister Polka-Dot, was a minor supervillain who fought Batman and Robin early in their careers. He became known for committing grandiose crimes revolving around a bizarre theme of polka dots. The spotted pattern on the Polka-Dot Man’s gimmicked costume also concealed a variety of hidden weapons.

Peacemaker

Peacemaker is a super-hero and soldier who loves peace so much, he’s willing to kill for it. Originally he was a pacifist diplomat who used strictly non-lethal weapons, although over time he developed into a more violent vigilante willing to make sacrifices for the greater good

So, this is what the line up could look like altogether:

  • Harley Quinn
  • Deadshot
  • Amanda Waller (not confirmed)
  • King Shark
  • Ratcatcher
  • Polka-Dot Man
  • Peacemaker

Taking Harley Quinn and Deadshot out of it I’m not too familiar with this potential new line up. I only know King Shark because of the character’s appearances in The Flash’s CW show. But James Gunn has done this before with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Taking a bunch of unknown characters and turning them into staple characters in a universe. You can see why the studio approached him for this gig. With the project set to start shooting this fall don’t be surprised if some more casting news drops in the next couple of weeks

The Shazam! Trailer Is Finally Here

The marketing for DC’s upcoming Shazam! movie is finally picking up steam. Over the past couple of weeks the studio has slowly been putting out more TV spots. And with the movie set to be released next month it was time for the big one! Another full trailer to hold us over for the next couple of weeks.

As for the trailer itself I thought it was really well done. The thing I liked about it the most is how they actually didn’t show much which is a good thing to me. For example, with Mark Strong unless you’ve read the comics we don’t know much about him from this trailer and the one they showed last year at SDCC. Warner Bros. in particular, has been guilty of showing too much of the story/footage with their trailers in the past. But not with Shazam! this time. They seem to be learning from their mistakes and taking a more laid back approach. Granted, the movie’s budgets isn’t in the same realms as the likes of Man of Steel/BvS and Aquaman. Shazam’s budget is much lower and is fully expected to make back its budget and much more.

When the trailer wasn’t showing us footage we had already seen the new material was a welcome sight. I must say the tone of this movie feels perfect. I love the chemistry between Freddy and Shazam! I do believe Freddy will steal the movie for me. How can you not love him? He’s basically acting like how anyone of us would act if we found out our best friend was a superhero. His performance comes across as so genuine and pure. As for Shazam himself, it’s going to be great to see how his journey evolves. While he’s having all of this fun at one point it’s going to get serious because Dr. Sivana does pose a genuine threat to him and his foster family.

The special effects for the movie look fine. There’s nothing that I have seen so far that has taken my breath way. There also hasn’t been anything that I think looks terrible. You can tell the film is on a smaller budget. And honestly, I know it might sound like I’m being too much of a DC fan, but the visuals don’t really bother me. With Shazam! I’m not looking for this overly complex story or a cinematic masterpiece. I’m just looking to have fun. And with everything I’ve seen so far I think I’m going to have a great time watching this movie.

What did you think of the trailer? Let me know your thoughts down below.

Will Smith Not Returning For Suicide Squad 2

Ever since James Gunn’s name was attached to the Suicide Squad sequel the project has been picking up steam behind the scenes. The plot for the movie is unknown as of now, but the most important piece of information we know about it is the movie is going to be more of a reboot rather than a sequel. This means we will be seeing an entirely new squad apart from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Some may have still thought that at least Will Smith will also be returning as Deadshot. Mainly because it’s freaking Will Smith. Well, according to Variety, Will Smith will not be returning for the upcoming movie due to a scheduling conflict. This sucks for me because while I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first movie, Will Smith’s Deadshot was easily my favourite part of it. But now it looks like only Harley Quinn will be returning for the sequel/reboot. I wouldn’t be opposed to Deathstroke being thrown into the movie instead. That would be a great trade in my opinion. The only positive we can take from this news is how confident the studio seems to be with this project as the report claims they’re looking to start production later this year.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to be released on August 6, 2021

Aquaman 2 Gets Release Date

After making over $1 billion at the Box Office this year it was only a matter of time before an Aquaman sequel was green-lit. The underwater sensation has become the flagship of the DCEU since it was released in December of last year. We all knew a sequel was coming, but when? Today, we found out that answer. Aquaman 2 will be released on December 16, 2022. So we’ve got to wait around 3 years before we see Jason Momoa’s Aquaman grace the big screen. I was honestly surprised they announced the date so soon. This would most likely explain that video of Jason Momoa running around the Warner Bros. offices claiming “You have no idea what’s coming next”. Aquaman is clearly the money maker at Warner Bros. I don’t blame them for pushing for a sequel so soon. It wont be long before we get a trilogy. Ain’t that crazy? I never thought we would be getting multiple Aquaman movies. Although it wasn’t stated in the report I would expect director James Wan to comeback for the sequel. It would only make sense right?

Aquaman is set to be released on December 16, 2022

Current DCEU slate:

  • Shazam! – April, 5
  • Joker – October, 4
  • Birds of Prey – February 7, 2020
  • Wonder Woman 2 – June 5, 2020
  • The Batman – June 25, 2021
  • Suicide Squad 2 – August 6, 2021
  • Aquaman 2 – December 16, 2022

The Batman Gets Release Date As Affleck Hangs Up Cape

Information about Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie has slowly been surfacing in the past 24 hours. Earlier today, we got an interview with Matt Reeves talking about what direction he’s going to be taking the movie in, along with a potential release date. Well, several hours later we now have a release date for the movie confirmed. But it comes as a bittersweet moment as it has finally been confirmed Ben Affleck will not be returning to the cowl. Starting with the good. We finally have a release date! Deadline with an exclusive confirmed Matt Reeves’ Batman movie is set to be released on June 25, 2021.

Ben Affleck – Batman no more…

Now for the bad news…well for me since Ben Affleck’s Batman is my favourite portrayal of the character so far. Deadline, in the same report also claimed that Affleck is going to hang up the cowl as the movie is set to be focused on a much younger Batman. At first when reading this report it felt like the same old stuff that has come out about Affleck leaving the role in the past.

Then Affleck took to Twitter and retweeted the article and stating how he was looking forward to seeing where director Matt Reeves takes the project. We all know this was most likely going to happen, but it still sucks to get the confirmation. Throughout the past couple of years it’s been tough watching Affleck going from directing, writing and starring in the Batman movie to ending up doing none of them at all now.

Regardless, no actor will be bigger than the actor for me and I’ll be there on opening night in June 2021. While I’m kinda fed up that I never got my Batfleck solo movie I can’t lie I’m still excited about the future of Batman without Ben Affleck. I can’t wait to see who takes on the cowl next.

Thanks for everything Ben!

Matt Reeves Details His ‘Noir’ Driven Batman Movie

Information on Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie has been scarce. Matt Reeves has been fairly quite since he came onto the project. He’s keeping things a mystery and keeping the fans guessing. Granted, he has done interviews in the past where he’s given us little snippets on his Batman film, but not enough as of yet. Today, he sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and actually gave us quite a detailed look into his Batman film from the potential villains, the story and the most important thing, the release date.

He are the key points to take away from this interview:

A Noir driven story

Lesley Goldberg:“So, Batman. Tell us your take”

Matt Reeves “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Confirmation there will be more than one villain in the movie:

Lesley Goldberg: “Have you begun the casting process?”

Matt Reeves:There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.

Potential 2021 release date

Lesley Goldberg: “What’s your goal as far as a release date?”

Matt Reeves: “We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”

Overall, there were three key things to take away from this interview. The first being how the story is going to be noir driven. Now he’s already told us this like five times already. But, it’s great to hear it again anyway. It looks like he’s going to be taking the character back to his roots. The second thing to take away is the use of multiple villains who will link in with this noir driven story. We all know Batman has one of the greatest rogues gallery. Given the type of story he’s going for my best guess would be that the Riddler is going to be one of the villains.

And now for the most important part of the interview. The release date. 2021 feels like a realistic release date since the project hasn’t even started filming yet. Keep in mind, we still haven’t had confirmation on if Ben Affleck is going to return to the role. Either way Matt Reeves has been saying all of the right things about his Batman movie. As a huge Batman fan this sounds like the movie of my dreams.
