Official: Disney and Fox Deal Completed

The deal taking Fox to Disney has been in the works for the past couple of years. And today the deal has finally been made official. We all knew it was going to happen, but with a deal that is worth up to $73.1 billion it was never going to happen overnight. Now, this deal has major implications across the entertainment world. But with my platform of course, the most important part of the deal is now Disney will gain control of Fox’s comic book properties such as Deadpool and the X-Men. Before I go any further please don’t mistake me for being happy that thousands of people are set to lose their jobs. Fox wanted to sell and this is one of the consequences of it.

The main thing to take away from this deal from a comic book fans’ perspective is the Fantastic Four and X-Men are ‘coming home’. Deadpool included under the umbrella of the X-Men of course. But what does this mean for the MCU?

The future of the MCU

The future of the MCU is about to get a whole lot more exciting with the addition of these characters. The possibilities are endless. Not only are we getting the Fantastic Four and X-Men we’re also getting the characters who are apart of their universes such as Dr. Doom, Silver Surfer and Galactus. It feels like this deal came at the perfect time with MCU’s phase 3 winding down after Avengers: Endgame. Of course we won’t see the X-Men or Fantastic Four show up at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The films that are currently on Marvels slate after Endgame are Spider-Man: Far From Home, Black Widow and The Eternals. However, Kevin Feige did mention that they are going to be announcing all of the films for their upcoming phase 4 later this year. Will the X-Men and Fantastic Four be apart of that? You would have to think so right. They’ve known about this deal for so long I would be shocked if they haven’t been planning ahead for it. My only question is are the X-Men and Fantastic Four going to slot right in? Are they going to get their own movies first? Because according to reports they’re set to recast everyone from the Fox movies except for Ryan Reynolds.

Right now, as the deal has time to sink in for fans we won’t see its impact for a couple of years to come. But as it stands X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants will be the last X-Men movies under the Fox banner. And I’ve got to say it’s kind of a bittersweet moment for me. I for the most part liked the X-Men movies under Fox. But I cannot lie I’m hyped to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four exist within the same universe as the Avengers.

Let me know your thoughts on the deal

Deadpool 2 Earns $125 Million During Opening Weekend

landscape-1521724725-deadpool5

If you were worried about the success of the first Deadpool movie being a fluke… All those fears are laid to rest as the numbers for the first weekend of Deadpool 2’s run are in. According to Forbes Deadpool 2 has made around $125 million in its first weekend making it one of the biggest openings for an R-Rated movie ever. Although it doesn’t beat the $132 million which the first Deadpool movie earned in its first weekend this is still a huge success. The drop off between the two numbers isn’t that big at all, also due to inflation we could see these numbers increase. If we are looking strictly on a numbers basis Deadpool 2 is definitely a success for the franchise and for the Fox brand. Amongst the movies that were released this year Deadpool 2’s opening weekend is only beaten by Infinity War ($250 million) and Black Panther ($218 million). To be beaten by these two films should bring no shame to anyone currently working at Fox. Especially if the Fox and Disney deal still goes through which only looks like it will be confirmed sooner rather than later. What this does show us is how comic book movies are now the popular medium in cinema. Isn’t that crazy to say? I would have never of thought that comic book movies would be amongst the highest grossing movies ever. As a lifelong comic book fan it’s great to see. Being a comic book nerd/geek is no longer seen as a negative. Comic books and movies are seen as cool now. This was shown with films such as Black Panther and Infinity War. I had never seen so many people who had never seen comic book movie be excited for these films. Hopefully this is a trend that continues to grow and we continue to see Box Office numbers such as these because that ultimately means we’ll get more comic book movies.

Here are the numbers for the first Deadpool movie:

  • Deadpool (2016) Lifetime Gross: $363,070,709 million (2nd all time R-Rated movies)
  • Deadpool (2016) Overall Box Office numbers: $783.1 million

Will it go on to outgross the first movie?

Let me know what you think of Deadpool 2’s early Box Office numbers

Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think of it?

Deadpool 2 Review (Non-Spoilers)

Deadpool is back with his second instalment which provides for a lot of fun and a solid follow up to the first movie

After the success of the first Deadpool movie we just knew they had struck lightning in a bottle. Today it still stands as the most successful R-Rated movie in history. And what do you do once you achieve this epic milestone? You create more movies and start your own little universe which brings us to Deadpool 2. Personally I enjoyed the first Deadpool but I have to be honest, it’s not the type of film I can just keep re-watching. I believe I’ve only seen the film like twice mainly because the story is pretty average and once you hear the same jokes again they just don’t have the same impact. But that’s probably just me, I’m not really the comedic type I prefer more of a story when I watch a film. Thankfully I found myself in luck with Deadpool 2. Of course it was going to have its jokes but what else? It’s fair to say that Deadpool 2 brings a lot more than the first one and provides in my opinion a better watching experience than its predecessor.

Story

landscape-1521724725-deadpool5

One of the main reasons why I prefer this film to the first one is because the story is much stronger here, it’s much more fluid and works well. Granted with the first film I doubt people were going in to watch it expecting this deep complex story. They just wanted to see a film which had been in the works for up to a decade once it was released. Now the story in Deadpool 2 isn’t the greatest you’ll ever see in a comic book movie, in fact it’s pretty straight forward. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing sometimes that’s all you need especially with a character like Deadpool who is going to spend the majority of the movie cracking jokes. The story here was easy to follow and pretty simple. Most of all it was surprisingly… emotional. I Never thought I would be using the word ’emotional’ to describe a Deadpool movie. But the emotional moments really worked in this film and it provided a nice break from the constant funny tone of the film. It was refreshing to see how some aspects of this film could actually be taken seriously for once. Does Deadpool 2 have the greatest story in the world? Of course not but in my opinion its better than the first one and provides more than just a film that is full of jokes.

Now going onto the main characters of the film:

Deadpool

af0212_pubstill_01_R_rgb.0

As for the main star of the show Deadpool again shines in his own film to no surprise. At this point it’s become hard for me to differentiate Wade Wilson from Ryan Reynolds, he fits the role so well. Luckily people in Hollywood are allowed second chances and thankfully he did after his Green Lantern movie. I know this has been said a million times but Ryan Reynolds was really born to play this role. You can tell how much passion he has for the character and the franchise, after all he is the main reason why Deadpool getting his own movie became a possibility. To sum it up you get more of the same from Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in this movie. The main benefit with this movie is how his origin is already out of the way and now they can just go full throttle with the character.

Cable

5a7b0cc8193a7a1c008b4ad3-750-375

What a year Josh Brolin is having! He was my favourite character in Infinity War and now he’s my favourite character in Deadpool 2. One of my main issues with the film is how it starts off slow. Although Deadpool is having full killing people I just didn’t find it that interesting. This goes on for the majority of the first act which is the weakest in my opinion. However that all changes when Cable shows up, Brolin’s performance is great. He provides a more serious tone to the movie that is needed but doesn’t shy away from making the occasional joke or two. His chemistry with Ryan Reynolds is great they bounce of each other really well. It would be interesting to know how much of their scenes were just straight improvised because it certainly felt like that at times. Also his character arc which is pretty tragic provides for an emotional turn in the movie that helped balance out the tone. I remember reading a report that with the reshoots they went in and added more Cable scenes to the movie. And thank god they did, he really is the star of the show for me.

X-Force

deadpool-2

Now for Wade’s own team which is pretty much his answer to the X-Men was something I was really looking forward to going into this movie. Unfortunately I left the film disappointed with how the team was handled. As for the members of the X-Force it’s really hard to talk about them without going into spoilers so I’ll leave that for my spoiler review. However I did just want to touch on Domino because I really enjoyed her character and thought she was a great addition to the film. But my main issue with her is the same I have with a number of characters in this film such as Negasonic Teenage Warhead which is that they don’t get enough screen time. The runtime for this movie is 2 hours and it flew by. They possibly could have added an extra 10-15 minutes which could have been used to focus on these important characters who by the end of the film just felt like fringe characters.

Things I didn’t like

Now for the things I didn’t like about this film because to be honest there were a few things I didn’t enjoy with this film. My main issue with Deadpool 2 is of course the humour. Look humour is subjective what I find funny may not be funny at all to you and for me there were a lot of jokes that did nothing for me in this movie. This was mainly because I didn’t understand the reference/joke sometimes they completely flew over my head. I found myself a lot of times asking myself “Who the hell is that actor he’s referring to?”. “What film is he talking about?”. Granted there are so many jokes in this film not everyone was going to hit but I can’t deny that a lot of them got no reaction from me. Something I already touched on of course is how the first act just isn’t that strong enough for a movie that has the runtime of 2 hours. I haven’t seen others complaining about it so maybe it’s just me. It does pick up as soon as Cable arrives so it does kind of make up for the slow start.

Now I’ve checked Wikipedia and it states that the budget for this film was $110 million. I believe the majority of this budget went to the marketing for this movie. I mean let’s be honest the marketing for both Deadpool movies has been some of the best we’ve seen in years. With that being said the budget could have been used in other areas of the movie especially with the visual effects. I’m not that guy that usually complains about CGI in comic book movies but some of it in this movie was so bad it just took me out. There’s this one sequence with Domino that looks so bad that it looked like the graphics of the last generations video game consoles. Even though Deadpool takes a shot at the visual effects by saying “Big CGI fight coming up” at one point in the movie that doesn’t make me give them a pass. The CGI overall is fine but there are just a few scenes where its really bad and cannot be ignored.

After credit scenes/cameos

Deadpool_(Ferris_Bueller_-_Go_Home).png

The post credit scenes for Deadpool 2 are great! Some have said they’re the greatest post credit scenes ever, I wouldn’t go that far but they’re the best I’ve seen in a long time. There are two main post credits scenes and then one after the actual credits. I also wanted to touch on the surprise cameos in this film which actually shocked me. Not only were there surprise cameos but there were surprise characters that stuck around for the rest of the film! I can’t wait to see how people react to the surprises in this film. I would advise you to stay off the internet until you see it because you can just never trust some people.

Overall Deadpool 2 is a really good film, there is a lot of fun to be had with the second instalment. Now does the film have its issues? Of course most films do as well. However I found myself liking the film a lot more than I expected. Did I enjoy it more than the first one? Probably not but I do think this is the better movie because of the story and characters such as Cable. If you liked the first one there’s really not much that will disappoint you with the sequel, I would highly recommend it to any comic book fan or anyone that just wants to sit back and enjoy an entertaining film.

Comic Book News ‘Weekly Roundup’ (Week 1)

Welcome to a new series that I will be doing here weekly on my site. The purpose of the ‘Weekly roundup’ is pretty simple, I will take the news and rumours from the week surrounding the comic book industry (movies in particular) and give my thoughts and opinions on them. This will allow me to cover more stories and give me a chance to write about both DC and Marvel as there seems to be new stories and rumours everyday. With that being said in this week’s edition I will be covering news such as Fox Studios future plans, Avengers: Infinity War, Wonder Woman 2, Batgirl and Shazam.

Fox Studios planning more X-Men movies

x-men-f4-deadpool-fox-disney

A couple of months ago when the deal with Disney and Fox was announced many comic book fans feared the worst. What would happen to the Fox movies? After X-Men: Dark Phoenix will they stop producing comic book movies? Well it looks like the deal hasn’t impacted futures plans at all for the studio as they plan to release 3 X-Men movies in 2019 and another 3 in 2020. Amongst these could possibly be solo films for both The Silver Surfer and Dr. Doom which were confirmed this week to be in production. Overall this is very encouraging news for all comic book fans because it means we have more studios producing these films not just two. Fox studios this year will release Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Infinity War Date Pushed up

Screen Shot 2017-11-29 at 19.58.40

Staying with Marvel they just decided to push up the date for their biggest movie to date. Yes Avenger: Infinity War will now be released a week earlier on April 27 worldwide. It’s the way they announced this new date which made everyone stop and admire the way Marvel runs its organisation. Here’s a recap of how the new release date was announced with a conversation between Robert Downey Jr. and the Marvel Studios on Twitter:

Personally I think it’s great that everyone gets to experience this huge film at the same time around the world. However does this mean that some characters will actually die in Infinity War? And they chose to push up the release date in hopes to stop spoilers from coming out by those would have got to seen it earlier in Europe like myself.

What’s going on with Batgirl?

batgirl-joss-whedon

The Batgirl project is one that has been surrounded by a lot of controversy ever since it was announced that Joss Whedon would be directing it. Personal stories that were made public about Whedon’s relationships made fans think that he wasn’t the right choice for this project in the first place. Now fast forward to after Justice League where he was brought in to do the majority of the reshoots which really rubbed fans the wrong way. Some felt he was brought in to change the film into a more Marvel like film under the studios instructions and he got a lot of the blame for Justice League. This really created a negative feeling around the Batgirl project in general, people just didn’t want to see him direct this film. However some fans actually got their wish as it was reported last week that Whedon had left the project after he ‘failed’ to come up with a story for Batgirl. Now it looks like Batgirl is back to square one with reports stating that the studio “has no imminent plans to find a new director”. Personally I felt it was a good decision for Joss Whedon to step down from the project. As a huge DC fan who spends a lot of time on Twitter, there was this negativity that surrounded the project because Whedon’s name was attached to it. The feeling around Batgirl would have only gotten worse as time went on if he was in charge.

Shazam First look (kinda)

Zachary-Levi-Shazam-Set-Photo

A couple of days ago the internet was sent into a frenzy when a picture of Zachary Levi in the Shazam costume leaked online from the film set. Now granted it’s not an official reveal of course, but that didn’t stop fans from either loving or hating what they saw. I personally love the look of the costume which resembles the New 52 Shazam with the cape and the hood. My only issue is that the materials used for the suit makes it look cheap, I was hoping for a more skin tight suit. I honestly thought the picture was a fake when I first saw it on my timeline. However I have faith in David F. Sandberg and the VFX team that they will do their best to make the suit look great when we finally get a official reveal from the studio.

Wonder Woman 2 developments

wonder-woman-2-villain-cheetah-kristen-wiig

With the success of the first Wonder Woman movie fans like myself can’t wait to see what Patty Jenkins has to offer with the sequel. Well this week we learned two things about the movie which is set to be released in 2019. The first being that the film will start production this summer in London which is great news. The second being that Cheetah is rumoured to be the main villain of the film. Along with that it was reported that Kristen Wiig is in talks with the studio to play the role. This news actually created some controversy amongst fans given her previous work. I for one have learned not to question casting decisions anymore I find them exciting actually especially when people are proved wrong. Lets hope the same happens if Kristen Wiig is actually set to play the role which we should get some official confirmation in the upcoming months. It was also rumoured that Steve Trevor’s character would also return in Wonder Woman 2. However that seems to have cooled down for now It’ll be interesting to see if there are any developments on this in the future.

That’s it for the first week of this ‘Weekly Roundup’ series, let my know your thoughts on the stories I covered above.

Also feel free to give me any feedback positive or negative I don’t mind.

See you next week!

Why you should watch ‘The Gifted’

Last month I put out a tweet asking if I should watch The Gifted. What I find hard is catching up with with all the current comic book TV shows. It feels like a new show or season is starting every week. Surprisingly the tweet received a lot of positive feedback mainly in favour for me to start watching the show. I was told by many that if I loved the X-Men then I would enjoy The Gifted. So I gave the first episode a chance which is what I do with most TV shows that I’m trying to get into. It’s all about whether the first episode can keep my interest enough to invest my time in a series as a whole. Well before I knew it after watching the first episode of The Gifted I had caught up with the series in the space of a couple of days.

What I loved most about this series is how it gave me such an old school X-Men vibe from the animated series that I watched as a kid. Without going into major spoilers the main story of the series is that the X-Men are no longer around but what they left behind is an underground organisation to act as a refuge for mutants who are being hunted down by the sentinels. One family comes to find out that the children themselves are mutants and find themselves on the run from authorities eventually joining the mutant underground. This provides for a lot of conflict and companionship that is dealt with well throughout this series with how the outsiders are now looking at the mutants to be accepted. Once at the mutant underground this is where the show is at its strength because we are introduced to characters such as Polaris and Marcus who quickly became my favourites. As a whole it’s interesting to see how the mutant underground operates and helps other mutants. At the same time the mutants have to make sure that they are one step ahead of the sentinels who are tracking them down in a continuous cat and mouse game.

One reason why I have always liked the the X-Men in both comics and movies is because they mirror social issues that go on today such as racism and immigration. The Gifted also touches on these subjects and does a good job at creating a world where mutants just want to be accepted for who they are. The writers do a good job at allowing you to see both sides of the argument because although you may not agree with the other side it’s interesting to see their thought process and where their issues with the mutants lie. One aspect I would also like to address is the CGI in this TV show. CGI is crucial to this TV show as it’s needed to showcase the mutants powers and with a TV budget in my opinion the CGI is great. With some shows you can tell that they are working on a small budget but that’s not the case here.

The best thing about this series is you don’t really have to be a X-Men at all to enjoy it, you can come into the series with no prior knowledge at all. Granted there are a lot of callbacks and easter eggs to the original X-Men characters. One of my favourite easter eggs is one of the characters ringtone being the theme song from the X-Men animated series.

With the first season being wrapped up just a couple of days ago I cannot wait to see where they go next with this series in future seasons. If I still haven’t convinced you to watch The Gifted just give the first episode a try, what’s the worst that could happen?

Let me know what you think of the series if you have watched it

‘Deadpool 2’ set for early release while ‘New Mutants’ and ‘Gambit are pushed back

Fox has made some major adjustment to their movie slate from 2018-2019 by changing the dates of 3 projects which are Deadpool 2, New Mutants and Gambit. Originally set for a June 1 date Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool 2 has been pushed up by two weeks with a new release date of May 18. However it’s not as good news for the fans of the New Mutants which was originally set to be released on April 13 this year has now been pushed back by 10 months! The new release date for the New Mutants is now set at February 22 (2019). Now that leaves us with the Gambit movie that just can’t seem to get going. As if it wasn’t bad enough for fans who were looking forward to this film who earlier found out that director Gore Verbinski has left the project. Now the Gambit film with original release date of February 14 has moved back to (June 7 2019). One has to think that the Gambit film is now in serious danger of being scrapped altogether.

May is set to be a huge month for film fans around the world as we will get Avengers: Infinity War (May 4) Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25) and of course Deadpool 2 (May 18)

Disney buys 21st Century Fox Assets in $52.4 billion deal

Last week rumours were reignited about Disney potentially buying key assets from 21st Century Fox in what would be a historic deal. Now these rumours were nothing new to us comic book fans as we have been hearing about a potential deal between the two companies for years but last week it seemed obvious that some type of deal had been struck between the two companies. One week later and the deal is finally confirmed, Disney has acquired 21st Century Fox in a monumental deal worth $52.4 billion. This means that the Fantastic Four and X-men are finally going back to Marvel… This is crazy! We will actually see them in the MCU interacting with the other Marvel characters.

Now there is a lot to this deal but here is a break down of what the deal means for us as comic book fans:

  • Fox will get Disney’s branding power behind some of its biggest entertainment properties, most notably Marvel’s X-Men and Fantastic Four character rosters.
  • Disney gets to complete its two major geek culture franchises, by adding the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties to its Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as gaining possession of the original theatrical versions of Star Wars, before the digitally remastered versions of were put out by George Lucas.
  • Disney will also gain a much larger library of titles and wider distribution network, thereby strengthening the company’s position as it moves to launch a streaming service to complete with Netflix in 2019.

(Via. comicbook.com)

Personally it will take a long time for this deal to sink in with me, honestly I’m both worried and excited at the same time if that makes sense. The Fantastic Four will definitely benefit from this deal. In my opinion the Fantastic Four going back to Marvel was always going to be main way for this franchise to survive. On the other hand you have the X-Men who in my opinion have been doing fine at Fox (apart from X-Men: Apocalypse). Some of my recent favourite comic book films have come from Fox such as Deadpool, Logan, Days of Future Past and First Class. I just worry that under Disney now will we be allowed to have these types of storylines and mature content with this new audience? A major part of me doesn’t like this deal from the business side because I’m just against companies building monopolies and buying out competition. As a comic book fan I believe this deal could hurt the quality of content in the future I mean who are Marvel really competition with now considering Justice League’s box office performance? I just think good competition drives quality content. Personally I was hoping for the type of deal Sony struck with Marvel over Spider-man which is more of a partnership but this is totally different.

Either way the comic book fan in me can’t help but be excited about the endless possibilities that this deal could bring regardless. I mean the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something fans have been waiting for years. Maybe this deal came too late could you imagine if this deal was struck earlier and we had the X-Men and Fantastic Four in films such as Captain America: Civil war and the upcoming Infinity War film? I guess its better late than never right. Now we will be able to see our favourite comic book storylines play out on the big screen with all the characters available at the studio’s disposal.

Let me know what you think of this deal below?

Are you excited to finally see the X-Men and Fantastic Four in the MCU?

Why Logan is my favourite film so far of this year

Should the X-Men and Fantastic Four go to Marvel?

It feels like every year the same question starts to crop up which is “How long until Marvel finally acquires the film licences for both the X-men and Fantastic Four?” The recent success of Spider-man Homecoming was bound to raise more of these type of questions that why don’t Fox make a deal with Marvel like Sony did with Spider-man? Continue reading Should the X-Men and Fantastic Four go to Marvel?

Why Logan is my favourite film so far of this year

It’s safe to say that as comic book fans we have been spoilt this year. The likes of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Wonder Woman were released to high praise from fans and critics worldwide. One film that I feel deserves a lot more credit and attention is Logan, which was released February earlier this year. Given its early release it’s easy to see why it may not be on everyone’s mind right now. But fear not as I am here to remind why Logan is not only the strongest comic book movie that was released this year. But one of the best films this year, overall.
