After a number of attempts it may finally look like Sony’s Spider-Man universe is going to be taking off after all. Or, should I say Spider-Man-less universe as the web-slinger is yet to make an appearance. With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man flourishing in the MCU it was left up to Tom Hardy’s controversial Venom movie to take the reins. Now, regardless of what you think about Venom, the movie is a hit. The film has only been out for more than a month and it has already made up to $800m at the box office. Did the studio just strike lucky with Venom? Well, it looks like we’re going to find out in the next couple of years as Sony have revealed two release dates in 2020 for further spin-off movies.
The first of these dates is July 10, 2020. And going by what we know about the films in development so far. My best guess would be that Jared Leto’s Morbius movie is going to be released on this date. Of all the Sony movies in development this is actually the closest to going in production. It has been reported that the studio are looking to shoot the project early next year. Also, a couple of weeks ago Morbius himself (Jared Leto) posted a video on his Twitter teasing the potential look of the character.
The second date that has been added to the slate is October 2, 2020. This would have to be the Venom sequel. It’s a no brainer. The film was highly successful and the studio already laid the groundwork for the sequel with the post credit scene in Venom.

A solo Joker movie is something that is clearly high up on the list of priorities in the boardrooms of Warner Bros. It was reported a couple of months ago that the studio were developing a solo Joker movie but with a different actor. While it was never confirmed there were reports of the studio talking to Joaquin Phoenix for the role. It was even reported at some point that a script would be submitted soon and production would start later this year. As if fans weren’t confused enough with this potential Joker movie Variety today has reported that the studio are developing a solo Joker movie starring Jared Leto. This movie is set to take place within a universe which consists of the characters form Suicide Squad. I’m all for Jared Leto getting another chance with the Joker role but a whole movie? I thought this would have been a perfect opportunity to put him as the main villain for the Suicide Squad sequel, learning from their previous mistakes. Suicide Squad 2 is still in development and according to reports it should go into production later this year. It will be interesting to see his role in this film. As for what I would prefer? I rather go with Leto’s Joker playing a more prominent role in Suicide Squad 2. I can’t lie though a solo Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, produced by Martin Scorsese set in the 80’s does sound like a great idea. But I think ultimately they need to set their sights on one solid idea. I mean there are more characters in the DC universe that deserve this kind of priority.

Do we need a Joker origin film?
The Joker film picks up pace as a script is set to be submitted next week
With all of the rumoured DC projects that are set to be put in motion one announced this week has caused quite a stir with comic book fans on the internet. The latest project added to the already crowded DC slate of films is a Joker origin movie. The film is set to be directed by The Hangovers Todd Phillips and to be produced by the legendary Martin Scorsese. What is also confirmed is that Jared Leto will not being returning to the role as the studio are opting for a younger Joker to fit in the 80’s setting. It’s safe to say Leto is not happy with this decision who responded “I’m a little confused too, but yeah, there are a couple of things happening in the DC world”. One has to feel sorry for Jared Leto given his issues with how little there was of him in Suicide Squad. Also what would make him somewhat angry with the studio is that with this ‘younger Joker’, Leonardo DiCaprio is said to be on the shortlist to play the role. Wouldn’t Leto be preferred as a young Joker compared to DiCaprio? Well I’m no expert I guess with CGI and make up Hollywood could make anything work today.
Now what has been discussed the most about this potential film is the Joker’s origins. If anyone is familiar with the Joker it’s that he has no origin really. That’s part of the mystery with the Joker and why we love him so much. Heath Ledger brought this across the best in the Dark Knight by every time changing the story of how he got his scars. No one knows anything about his past and upbringing which what makes him such an unpredictable villain. Now there have been hints at the Joker’s origins with Alan Moore’s iconic The Killing Joke. This novel was a great take on the character on the Joker by actually making him somewhat of a sympathetic figure and all it took was for him to have one bad day to make him who is he. In comparison this showed the similarities of the Joker and Batman in how the night Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered he was always destined to become the Batman. This is the worry with Comic book fans, if we get the origins of the Joker does he as a character lose his lure? Can’t this be a character in which we never fully understand and is left to a mystery?
With that being said a Joker film described as a crime Drama set in the 80s under the direction of Martin Scorsese does sound like a great movie either way. It’s just whether it can be executed correctly and keep intact what we have always love about the Joker Character.
