Report: Doctor Strange Sequel To Start Shooting Next Spring

After the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is more popular than ever. As someone who didn’t love his solo movie back in 2016, I’m now really anticipating the sequel. Doctor Strange along with Thor was the highlight of Avengers: Infinity War to me. A sequel for the highly successful first instalment was always going to follow. But when would we eventually see it? Today, Mirror has reported the studio are looking to start shooting the sequel next spring. This sequel is also going to be accompanied by a huge pay rise for Benedict Cumberbatch. He is set to make £7.5 million, compared to the £2.5 million he made with the first movie. Mirror, also claims shooting for the movie could take up to six months. If this is true we could see the Doctor Strange sequel in late 2020 at the earliest.

Personally, I can’t wait for the Doctor Strange sequel. As I stated before I wasn’t really a fan of his solo movie but after Avengers: Infinity War he became one of my favourites. With his origin movie out of the way. Hopefully, we could have a movie that displays the wizard’s full power, just like in Avengers: Infinity War.

Let me know your thoughts on this news.

Are you looking forward to another Doctor Strange movie?

What’s Going on With X-Men: Dark Phoenix?

Despite its chequered production behind the scenes Fox’s upcoming instalment in the X-Men franchise: X-Men: Dark Phoenix is still set to be released next year. However, with reports that the project is set to go under reshoots fans have been questioning whether this film will actually be released on the intended date of 14 February (2019). The upcoming reshoots has left many fans worried about the project because various reports have started claiming the reshoots are set to last for three months to just a couple of weeks. With this article I hope to clear up the mess surrounding X-Men: Dark Phoenix along with the impact of the impending Disney/Fox deal.

What we know about the production so far

x-men-dark-phoenix-umbrellas-1064080

As of right now the shooting for X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been completed for some time now. Filming initially started at the end of June last year and was completed by October. This three to four month filming process is perfectly normal for any major blockbuster film. What worries fans is how apart from one or two stills from the movie, we haven’t seen much at all from the project. However, this just might be the way in which Fox Studios operates. I remember not seeing anything from Logan (Fox’s last X-Men movie) until a couple of months before its release. Logan was released in February 2017 and we didn’t get our first trailer until October prior that year. With X-Men: Dark Phoenix releasing in the same month as Logan I wouldn’t be surprised if we got the first trailer in October again.

Reshoots

dark-phoenix-plot-details-700x300

Just like with every other major Hollywood project X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to go under reshoots. The reshoots were initially set to start earlier this year but due to the likes of Sophie Turner having to shoot the final season of Game of Thrones the reshoots were pushed back. However, it was Pierre Moreau comments and a report which surfaced yesterday on the upcoming reshoots which left many people like myself worried for the future of this project.

When questioned on the reshoots Moreau responded with:

“They are returning the last part of the film. It’s a nice surprise” – LA PRESSE

The report would also state that instead of three weeks of additional photography the reshoots are going to last up to three months. If true this is roughly the same amount of time they spent with the initial shooting for the film. While the third act of the movie is set to be reshot, we could see a totally different film altogether after three months of shooting. As a DC fan a lot of this just feels like Justice League all over again. The Hollywood Reporter reported on the studio looking to reshoot the final act of the movie earlier this year.

The mutant film will now undergo some reshoots as it heads toward a new opening date, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The movie was in postproduction, and insiders say it had come in slightly underbudget. But sources say that the third act will need some reworking, thus reshoots.

The extent of the new material isn’t known as Simon Kinberg, the X-Men franchise writer-producer who is making his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, has yet to pen anything. But one insider expects the shoot to cost under $10 million and to take place in late summer/early fall. – The Hollywood Reporter

Shortly after the report containing Pierre Moreua’s comments on the reshoots Collider reached out to people who are close to the project. They stated that contrary to reports the reshoots are only set to last for “a couple of weeks”. To me this just sounds like they’re trying their best to reassure everyone because when it was revealed the project could potentially go through three months of reshoots comic book fans in general were not happy. In fact I saw many fans who weren’t even surprised by this report. It just led to more calls for the film to be cancelled altogether. Regardless of the various reports the film is set to go through reshoots. And that’s fine, it’s just how long are these reshoots going to last?

What’s Disney’s role in the movie?

Disney-Fox-deal-700x300

With the Disney and Fox deal being approved by shareholders last mont it’s all but confirmed now that both the X-Men and Fantastic Four will be coming to the MCU. I’ve seen people questioning Disney’s role in this project and calls for them to pull the movie. Although, the X-Men will eventually join the MCU this doesn’t mean Disney has control over Fox’s current projects. The deal won’t be finalised for another couple of years with reports stating both franchises will be integrated with the MCU in 2020-21. While the deal won’t directly impact the movie I do think with how public the impending deal is it’ll impact the general audience. Some people would probably be thinking “What’s the point of watching this movie when I can just wait a couple of years to see them with the rest of the Avengers?” Unless you’re really a fan of the characters and the cast what’s the draw to go see this movie? What comes after this film? Nothing… except for a new chapter with a different cast.

As it stands X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release on 14 February next year despite the period of reshoots it goes through. If it does go through three months of reshoots I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this release date get pushed back again.

Tom Holland Spotted In Homecoming Suit On Set Of Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home has only been shooting for a couple of weeks in the UK. And while some set photos have already leaked, none have given away too much about the film. However, today Tom Holland may have just given us our first real piece of information about the film. Tom Holland in an Instagram video talked to fans from the set of Far From Home about the potential opportunity of joining him on set thanks to The Brothers Trust.

One of the most interesting things to point out in this video is how Tom Holland is in the suit from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Like with every comic book movie one of the main aspects of our favourite characters are their suits. In Avengers: Infinity War we saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man receive an upgrade to the Iron-Spider suit thanks to Tony Stark. Seeing Tom Holland on the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home in the suit from Homecoming only raises more questions. Does he give Tony back the suit after the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4? Could they possibly be filming flashback scenes? Is Spider-Man: Far From Home set before the events of Infinity War? Or is Tom Holland trying to play a trick on us. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised given how much he has been blamed for revealing spoilers in the past.

With that being said regardless of how much he wears the original suit from Homecoming in this film I’m definitely expecting him to receive another upgrade by the end of the movie.

My Thoughts On The Shazam! Trailer

Now I can’t lie although I thought the Aquaman trailer was amazing I found myself enjoying the Shazam! trailer a lot more. This is not a knock to the Aquaman trailer or James Wan, I just find myself replaying the Shazam! trailer more than the Aquaman one. To be honest I was already sold on Aquaman before the trailer was even released. I know what James Wan is capable of and the horror elements he would bring to Aquaman. Now Shazam! is an entirely different case to me. A kid who turns into a superhero with the mention of a single word sounds great on paper (hence the popularity of the character). But how would that work on the big screen? Especially in 2019? This was one of the biggest questions I had going into this trailer. And Sandberg along with the cast look go have got it spot on. I love everything about this trailer. The tone, humour and even the way its shot given its much smaller budget compared to the previous DCEU films. Now I’m not going to pretend like I’m the biggest Shazam/Captain Marvel fan ever but from what I know of the character they have done a good job at both respecting the past of the character while embracing the more recent iterations of Shazam with the New 52 run.

sz-cc-screencaps-60

Zachary Levi looks great in the suit and plays the whole inner-child aspect of the character really well. Granted we can see that the suit is padded and Zachary Levi clearly isn’t that big but it feels like they did it on purpose, it fits the tone of the movie. While Zachary Levi will play the most important role in the movie the child actors that were picked here are the real stars of the trailer for me. Asher makes a great Billy Batson in my opinion and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman was involved in my favourite moments from the trailer. I just feel like he does a great job at representing us comic fans and how we would react if we find out our foster brother had superpowers.

sz-cc-screencaps-75

I’ve seen people complain about the trailer potentially showing too much of the movie already. I’m guessing the majority of what they showed in the trailer takes place within the first 30/45 minutes of the movie. While I want to see Billy running around using his powers I also want to see the struggles he goes through as he’s trying to find that family structure in his life. But when he does discover his powers in the trailer that’s when the fun begins. Those training montages are great I can’t wait to see more of them. My favourite part of the trailer is the robbery scene where Shazam finds out he’s bulletproof. Freddy’s reaction in this scene makes it for me, you can tell him and Zachary have great chemistry on screen. We only caught a glimpse of Mark Strong’s Doctor Sivana and I’m expecting us to see a lot more of him in the second trailer. This just shows how they haven’t given away too much with this trailer.

sz-cc-screencaps-107

Overall while the character of Shazam is familiar to me this trailer makes me want to go back and start reading through his comics. I think New Line Cinema could potentially have a gem on their hands with this movie. They really need to go full force with the marketing of the film. If done right and this trailer is a great start I think Shazam could reach the same level of popularity as the rest of the Justice League members in the cinematic universe. Speaking of cinematic universes I love how both Aquaman and Shazam! are completely movies in terms of style and tone but they still exist in the same universe. One day I hope we get to see Billy and Freddy interact with the Justice League in the future.

My Thoughts On The Aquaman Trailer

aq-cc-screencaps-73

My expectations for this trailer were so high to the point where I felt worried about being let down by it in the end. Thankfully James Wan really blew it out of the water with this trailer(pun intended). This 2 and a half minute trailer was enough to satisfy fans like me who have been waiting for an Aquaman movie for years.

aq-cc-screencaps-59

During the promotion run for this trailer people who visited the set compared this film to blockbusters such as Star WarsBlade Runner and Lord of the Rings. And we saw all of these influences in the trailer. I’ve seen people complain about the use of CGI in this film and it blows my mind. Of course, this film would need to heavily rely on CGI, 2/3’s of the film is going to be underwater after all. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to make a live action underwater film look realistic. And to be honest they haven’t gone down the realistic route with this film. They have fully embraced that this is a comic book movie which pulls from multiple genres such as sci-fi and adventure. Visually the trailer is stunning and Atlantis looks even better than it did on the comic pages. There are some shots where the CGI looks choppy but that’s to be expected at this early stage. James Wan and his VFX team still have several months to perfect these shots.

aq-cc-screencaps-111

As for the plot I love how Arthur is seen as an outsider now because he grew up on the surface, almost fully embracing his human side. The story of him coming home after Orm has taken over goes with the movie’s tagline “Home is calling“. It just shows that no matter how much time he spends on the surface world Atlantis is still his true home and I think we’ll see him struggle with the responsibilities he has on both the surface and underwater. Orm already looks like he’s going to be a General Zod level main villain. Patrick Wilson was a great choice for Orm and he has been provided with a really interesting character who will be a great match for Arthur and even someone we could sympathise with at points during the film given his motivations. The climax of the film looks to be an epic battle between Orm and Arthur involving their opposing armies and once again the visuals of the war scenes look amazing. My personal highlight from the trailer is finally getting to see a live action version of Black Manta. The suit looks incredible and Yahya looks great without the helmet on too. I felt like we didn’t get to see enough of him but that’s understandable since Orm is the main villain and Black Manta is being built up to star in multiple movies.

Overall I loved the trailer and it was the perfect appetiser for what’s to come in this underwater adventure. Remember this was only the first trailer, there’s still so much that we haven’t seen yet.

First Official Look At ‘Shazam!’

With SDCC right around the corner I was expecting us to get our first official look at Shazam! during the Warner Bros. panel. However, the studio are looking to start the hype train early by giving us our first look at Shazam! After months of behind the scenes shots and leaked promotional images we finally have our first look at the character. Entertainment Weekly has provided us with a still from the upcoming movie which features both Shazam! and Freddy Freeman (Billy Batson’s best friend). Comparing this shot the ones that leaked from the set I straightaway noticed some changes that they made to the suit. Firstly, the boots are completely different, the gauntlets look more detailed along with the belt.

Screen Shot 2018-07-11 at 18.23.26.png

Director David Sandberg talking to Entertainment Weekly went into detail about the suit:

“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman,”

Just like with every comic book movie directors try their best to respect the past while embracing the present and David Sandberg has shown that with the addition of the hood on the suit which is influenced by the Golden Age comics:

“It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”

Personally I love this image, it really captures the tone of the film. Shazam! will be a much lighter film compared to the previous entries in the DCEU. Everyone involved in the project seemed to have a lot of fun shooting this movie and I can’t wait to see what they bring with them to SDCC. My prediction is that we’ll get a teaser trailer next week along with some more official images. Mind you we still haven’t seen what Shazam! will look like when all the VFX are applied to the character.

Synopsis for Shazam!

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”

Shazam is set to be released 5 April 2019

Djimon Hounsou To Play The Wizard In Shazam!

Still-of-Wizard-from-Shazam-DC-Comics

Filming for the Shazam! movie has been completed for a couple of months now.

But that hasn’t stopped updates surrounding the project from surfacing as we learned today. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly it has been reported that Djimon Hounsou will now be playing the role of the Wizard in the project.

This news came as a shock to many fans because the last we heard of the Wizard in the Shazam! movie how he was going to be portrayed by Ron Cephas Jones. However that has now changed with Hounsou (who is most recently known for his role as Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy) jumping into the DC universe.

Ironically he will be starring in both the Captain Marvel (the original name or Shazam!) and Shazam! films next year. The Wizard plays an important role in the titular characters mythology, he’s the main reason why Billy gets his powers. I can’t help but think if anyone else could be making a surprise appearance in this film given how this news was kept under the radar for a long time.

Djimon Hounsou will be joining the likes of Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Ross Butler, Asher Angel and many more in Shazam!

Shazam! will be released on 5 April 2019

The Rock Provides Update On Black Adam Movie And Teases Potential Cameos

The busiest man in Hollywood has found time in his already jam-packed schedule to talk about one of his future projects. The Rock in an interview with Filmstarts to promote his film Skyscraper ended up talking about the Black Adam movie which he is set to star in for a while now. Fans have been starved of any type of information surrounding this highly anticipated movie but today The Rock shed some light on when he hopes they can start shooting it along with some potential cameos that could feature in the film.

When questioned on the possibility of the project starting production next year The Rock responded:

“With Black Adam, I don’t think we’re going to start early next year.”

He also went on to say:

“Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that, if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it.”

One piece of information The Rock revealed about the film that should get fans excited is how he hinted at potential cameos from other DC characters in the Black Adam movie:

“Without giving anything away, there MIGHT be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes,”

However The Rock doesn’t want to get our hopes up as he claims Black Adam is a character that can fully stand by himself in his solo movie:

“We’ll see. That’s been the beauty of Black Adam as we’ve been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that’s also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.”

Just by reading this interview I think it’s pretty clear that they are planning to include other DC characters in this movie. Straightaway the two characters that jumped into my mind when I saw this headline were Superman and Shazam. As for The Rock himself I’m really happy he’s attached to the project. He’s been a fan of Black Adam for a long time and it shows every time he talks about the project. As he has stated before:

“I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I’ve just loved that backstory. I think that Black Adam has always been, to me, the most intriguing superhero.”

With the popularity of comic book movies today I think this movie will both benefit him and DC. We know what The Rock can do, at times even as a fan it feels like he’s playing the same role again and again. This Black Adam movie will be a great opportunity for him to really display his acting talents in my opinion.

The Rock’s future projects:

Fighting with My Family – 2019

Hobbs & Shaw – 2019

Jumanji Sequel – 2019

Red Notice – (Production 2019/Release: TBA)

Black Adam – Production (potentially 2019 release 2020/21?)

Who would you like to see show up in the Black Adam movie?

Confirmed: Joaquin Phoenix To Play The Joker In Standalone Film

The standalone Joker movie has been picking up steam behind the scenes ever since it was first reported on last year. A standalone Joker movie that didn’t feature Jared Leto seemed far fetched at first given how studios like to build universes in a linear fashion. But Warner Bros. has decided to expand their DC universe by pretty much creating another one. This will allow them to produce these standalone movies that aren’t connected in anyway to the DC Extended Universe that we know so well. The biggest question surrounding this Joker movie was if Jared Leto isn’t going to be the Joker then who will? For as much as this project has been reported on there were only two names that were linked to the iconic Joker role, they were Joaquin Phoenix and Leonardo Dicaprio. Today it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Joaquin Phoenix will now star as the Joker in the movie with Todd Phillips directing. The standalone Joker movie is set to follow in the same footsteps as the Birds of Prey movie by using a much smaller budget compared to the recent DC films. THR has estimated that the standalone Joker movie will have a budget of $55 million.

As for the story itself it has already been revealed that this film will follow the work of Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. The film will be set in the 80s and it will be focusing on the Joker’s life prior to what has made him one of the greatest villains ever. The film will follow the journey of a failed comedian just like in the iconic graphic novel. The most important thing to take away from this scoop today is how the studio are looking to start shooting the film in September this year. We might not have to wait that long before we see this movie on the big screen. THR claimed it’s possible that it could be set for a late 2019 release.

Westworld: Season 2, Episode 9: “Vanishing Point” Review

The week’s episode of Westworld was nothing short of emotional. I’m still trying to collect my thoughts after what just happened. This episode has really set us up for what’s expected to be a grand finale next week. This episode was really centred around William/The Man in Black and how his life has changed since he first visited the park. This is important because it plays in with his motives for getting to the Valley Beyond, Emily and his future in the series. Also we see how the likes of Dolores and Bernard take crucial steps in the same journey towards the Valley Beyond during this episode.

Without wasting anymore time let’s get into the events of this episode!

‘One last game’

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 01.38.16

I know William/The Man in Black is a bad guy but he really went through some stuff in this episode. The episode starts off with William and his wife who we get to see for the first time at a party in his honour. Throughout the season we have seen glimpses of the moment where William finds his wife in the bathtub but how she ends up in the bathtub and what leads to it is something we were always building up to. And finally in this episode we got our answers. Earlier in the episode Emily mentioned how her mother was a drunk and I initially thought she must have drowned in the bathtub by accident while being intoxicated. We find out that Ford is somewhat behind her death, or at least he plays a minor role. I say minor because it was evident in this episode how fractured their relationship really was. The park had torn them away from each other, William’s wife was even questioning him on if anything was real to him which is a theme that plays out later in the episode.

Although William ultimately blames himself for her death it was actually his wife finding his profile card that became the tipping point. She found out what he had been  doing in the park and how much of his activities were based around another woman (Dolores). Also with this you have the speech where William tells her that he belongs to a different world implying the park, it pushes her over the edge. It was a really emotional scene, even though William was the main cause of her death I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Something that I keep playing over in my head from this episode is Ford giving William his profile card at the bar. Even in the real world was he controlling the narrative? How would he know that his wife would find the card? Was this all apart of his “last game” for William? Either way it resulted in the death of William’s wife and while it may seem like they weren’t in love, her death has certainly impacted both him and Emily in the park.

Is this another one of your tricks Ford?

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 01.38.02.png

After the showdown with Maeve and The Man in Black Emily showed up at the Ghost Nation’s camp to ‘heal’ her father. And to be fair to her she does heal her father regardless of her true intentions, which we actually find out in this episode. She doesn’t just want to leave the park with her father and go off happily in the sunset acting like nothing happened. No she truly wants to make him suffer. Emily makes it clear that she knows all of the messed up things her father and the company has done. She wants to publicly shame William and keep him in locked up just like he did with James Delos. Emily also mentions how she wants answers relating to her mother’s death. I’m not sure if that means she wants to bring her back because her mind maybe stored at the Valley Beyond. We find out in this episode that she actually blames herself for the death of her mother. I thought her relationship with her mother was great but it actually wasn’t. While William didn’t want to see his wife go into rehab Emily forced it upon her. I guess she feels like this had pushed her mother over the edge to take her own life. By the end of the episode the relationship between The Man in Black and Emily takes a turn I did not see coming at all. There has been a number of times in this season where The Man in Black has thought Ford had been playing a trick on him by talking to him through other hosts. I always thought it was just funny that he thought Ford was messing with him but in this episode it meant something darker. The Man in Black to put it simply is losing both himself and his mind in the park to the point where he kills the Delos team that arrives to help him. This tragically ends with him then killing Emily because he thought she was a host this whole time until he finds his profile card in her hand. I mean this shocked the hell out of me. It was so dark, any sympathy I had for The Man in Black is thrown out of the window at this point. The Man in Black goes on to question if anything about him is real and whether he’s making these decisions by himself. It ends of the cliffhanger of him about to cut into his to see if he’s a host. Personally I don’t think he’s a host at this point but it looks like we’ll be getting our answer next week.

Not everyone gets to make it to the Valley Beyond

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 01.43.34.png

Look I knew that Dolores would be the only one to make it to the Valley Beyond amongst her group. I knew her reprogramming Teddy would comeback to haunt her in a major way and it did. Ever since Teddy mentioned how he knew she reprogrammed him the writing was on the wall. I personally thought that he would end up betraying her but to see him kill himself was shocking. I love how they did it though I must admit that. We saw how far back his love for Dolores goes even before they first met in Sweetwater. Their connection started before the park while they were getting programmed. While he can’t hurt her he knows killing himself is the only way to for him to escape this nightmare he’s been dragged into as he tells her “You’ve made me into a monster”. This scene was brutal, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for Teddy. Knowing what Dolores had done to him but he still loves her at the end of the day. What I found interesting was the clear similarities between Dolores and William with how they both had a major role in the death of someone they love. We’ve seen what the death of William’s wife has done to him so it will be interesting to see how Dolores will react to Teddy’s death going forward.

The Forge

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 01.45.10

This whole time we thought the Valley Beyond was called The Door but not anymore, Its actually called ‘The Forge’ now. What exactly is The Forge? Well it’s described as a much bigger version of the Cradle. It’s the culmination of what Delos has been doing the entire time since William took over the company. At The Forge they basically have the code of all their guests that have entered the park. It’s interesting that everyone is going there for different reasons. Dolores wants to use it against the humans while The Man in Black wants to burn it down. The Ghost Nation members who came into contact with Dolores during this episode see it as a passage to the real world. I’m still confused as to why Bernard is going there. Next episode we’ll see everyone finally meet up at The Forge and see its real purpose.

Overall I thought this was an excellent episode of Westworld. Leading up to the season finale this episode really tied up all the ends to the point where everyone is heading towards ‘The Forge’. The Man in Black was prominent in this episode and I think it was that way for a reason. Having seen the storyline of his wife and daughter play out I believe we’ll finally see the end of his story in the season finale. I have high expectations for next week’s episode. It’s all been building to this and I expected nothing but to be blown away at the end of the season finale.
