Official: Disney and Fox Deal Completed

The deal taking Fox to Disney has been in the works for the past couple of years. And today the deal has finally been made official. We all knew it was going to happen, but with a deal that is worth up to $73.1 billion it was never going to happen overnight. Now, this deal has major implications across the entertainment world. But with my platform of course, the most important part of the deal is now Disney will gain control of Fox’s comic book properties such as Deadpool and the X-Men. Before I go any further please don’t mistake me for being happy that thousands of people are set to lose their jobs. Fox wanted to sell and this is one of the consequences of it.

The main thing to take away from this deal from a comic book fans’ perspective is the Fantastic Four and X-Men are ‘coming home’. Deadpool included under the umbrella of the X-Men of course. But what does this mean for the MCU?

The future of the MCU

The future of the MCU is about to get a whole lot more exciting with the addition of these characters. The possibilities are endless. Not only are we getting the Fantastic Four and X-Men we’re also getting the characters who are apart of their universes such as Dr. Doom, Silver Surfer and Galactus. It feels like this deal came at the perfect time with MCU’s phase 3 winding down after Avengers: Endgame. Of course we won’t see the X-Men or Fantastic Four show up at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The films that are currently on Marvels slate after Endgame are Spider-Man: Far From Home, Black Widow and The Eternals. However, Kevin Feige did mention that they are going to be announcing all of the films for their upcoming phase 4 later this year. Will the X-Men and Fantastic Four be apart of that? You would have to think so right. They’ve known about this deal for so long I would be shocked if they haven’t been planning ahead for it. My only question is are the X-Men and Fantastic Four going to slot right in? Are they going to get their own movies first? Because according to reports they’re set to recast everyone from the Fox movies except for Ryan Reynolds.

Right now, as the deal has time to sink in for fans we won’t see its impact for a couple of years to come. But as it stands X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants will be the last X-Men movies under the Fox banner. And I’ve got to say it’s kind of a bittersweet moment for me. I for the most part liked the X-Men movies under Fox. But I cannot lie I’m hyped to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four exist within the same universe as the Avengers.

Let me know your thoughts on the deal

What’s Going on With X-Men: Dark Phoenix?

Despite its chequered production behind the scenes Fox’s upcoming instalment in the X-Men franchise: X-Men: Dark Phoenix is still set to be released next year. However, with reports that the project is set to go under reshoots fans have been questioning whether this film will actually be released on the intended date of 14 February (2019). The upcoming reshoots has left many fans worried about the project because various reports have started claiming the reshoots are set to last for three months to just a couple of weeks. With this article I hope to clear up the mess surrounding X-Men: Dark Phoenix along with the impact of the impending Disney/Fox deal.

What we know about the production so far

x-men-dark-phoenix-umbrellas-1064080

As of right now the shooting for X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been completed for some time now. Filming initially started at the end of June last year and was completed by October. This three to four month filming process is perfectly normal for any major blockbuster film. What worries fans is how apart from one or two stills from the movie, we haven’t seen much at all from the project. However, this just might be the way in which Fox Studios operates. I remember not seeing anything from Logan (Fox’s last X-Men movie) until a couple of months before its release. Logan was released in February 2017 and we didn’t get our first trailer until October prior that year. With X-Men: Dark Phoenix releasing in the same month as Logan I wouldn’t be surprised if we got the first trailer in October again.

Reshoots

dark-phoenix-plot-details-700x300

Just like with every other major Hollywood project X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to go under reshoots. The reshoots were initially set to start earlier this year but due to the likes of Sophie Turner having to shoot the final season of Game of Thrones the reshoots were pushed back. However, it was Pierre Moreau comments and a report which surfaced yesterday on the upcoming reshoots which left many people like myself worried for the future of this project.

When questioned on the reshoots Moreau responded with:

“They are returning the last part of the film. It’s a nice surprise” – LA PRESSE

The report would also state that instead of three weeks of additional photography the reshoots are going to last up to three months. If true this is roughly the same amount of time they spent with the initial shooting for the film. While the third act of the movie is set to be reshot, we could see a totally different film altogether after three months of shooting. As a DC fan a lot of this just feels like Justice League all over again. The Hollywood Reporter reported on the studio looking to reshoot the final act of the movie earlier this year.

The mutant film will now undergo some reshoots as it heads toward a new opening date, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The movie was in postproduction, and insiders say it had come in slightly underbudget. But sources say that the third act will need some reworking, thus reshoots.

The extent of the new material isn’t known as Simon Kinberg, the X-Men franchise writer-producer who is making his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, has yet to pen anything. But one insider expects the shoot to cost under $10 million and to take place in late summer/early fall. – The Hollywood Reporter

Shortly after the report containing Pierre Moreua’s comments on the reshoots Collider reached out to people who are close to the project. They stated that contrary to reports the reshoots are only set to last for “a couple of weeks”. To me this just sounds like they’re trying their best to reassure everyone because when it was revealed the project could potentially go through three months of reshoots comic book fans in general were not happy. In fact I saw many fans who weren’t even surprised by this report. It just led to more calls for the film to be cancelled altogether. Regardless of the various reports the film is set to go through reshoots. And that’s fine, it’s just how long are these reshoots going to last?

What’s Disney’s role in the movie?

Disney-Fox-deal-700x300

With the Disney and Fox deal being approved by shareholders last mont it’s all but confirmed now that both the X-Men and Fantastic Four will be coming to the MCU. I’ve seen people questioning Disney’s role in this project and calls for them to pull the movie. Although, the X-Men will eventually join the MCU this doesn’t mean Disney has control over Fox’s current projects. The deal won’t be finalised for another couple of years with reports stating both franchises will be integrated with the MCU in 2020-21. While the deal won’t directly impact the movie I do think with how public the impending deal is it’ll impact the general audience. Some people would probably be thinking “What’s the point of watching this movie when I can just wait a couple of years to see them with the rest of the Avengers?” Unless you’re really a fan of the characters and the cast what’s the draw to go see this movie? What comes after this film? Nothing… except for a new chapter with a different cast.

As it stands X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release on 14 February next year despite the period of reshoots it goes through. If it does go through three months of reshoots I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this release date get pushed back again.

Comic Book News ‘Weekly Roundup’ (Week 2)

Welcome to the second week of this ‘Weekly Roundup’ series. There has been a wide range of news/stories that came out last week and mainly a lot of rumours. However I picked the ones that are both official and the ones that I felt were most interesting to talk about. Today we will be looking at Wonder Woman 2 casting news, more Shazam leaks, Black Panther’s Box Office numbers, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The Joker movie.

So let’s get started with the first story!

Wonder Woman Casting Announcement (Cheetah)

650_1200

It was reported last week that Warner Bros. were in talks with Kristen Wiig to star as Cheetah in the Wonder Woman sequel. While there are rumours surrounding the DC extended universe everyday this story just felt different to me. Maybe it was because of the outlets that were reporting the news such as TheWrap that made it feel like there was something to this than just rumours. Well last week Patty Jenkins confirmed these rumours to be true as she welcomed Kristen Wiig to the Wonder Woman franchise with a tweet. Gal Gadot soon followed with her own welcoming message to Kristen Wiig on Twitter. Spending a lot of time on social media I’m still seeing a very mixed response to this news just like when the rumours first appeared. I for one have learned especially with the DCEU not to judge casting announcements until the film comes out because thankfully I have been proven wrong a few times.

Wonder Woman 2 is set to be released November 1 2019 and is expected to start shooting this summer.

Black Panther crosses $1 Billion at Box Office

7791791421_chadwick-boseman-incarne-black-panther-au-cinema

One of Marvel’s most successful movies ever… Wait one of the most successful movies ever! Honestly I didn’t think this film was going to be as big as it is now I’ll admit that. I’ve lost count of the number of records it has already broken having been out only for a month. Well the film’s latest biggest achievement came just a couple of days ago when it reach $1 Billion at the WorldWide Box Office. That’s insane for a comic book movie! Honestly at best I was thinking it would be around the $800 Million mark but this has blown my expectations out of the water. And it’s fully deserved I loved this film I think it’s a win for the comic book movie genre in general. It’ll be interesting to see how Infinity War’s numbers will compare to Black Panther’s which is only a couple of months away.

Joker Movie To Follow The Killing Joke Plot

batman-killing-joke-movie-release-date

Now this is a movie that when I first heard about it I thought was a long shot. At best I didn’t expect to hear anything about this film for a number of years. However this film seems to be a priority for Warner Bros. It was earlier last year when reports started to surface about a script being written and plans to start production late 2018. Then we heard that this Joker film would be an origin story but without Jared Leto’s Joker. The studio were reportedly looking at Joaquin Phoenix to play the iconic role. Well just last week we got even more developments as the plot details about the project emerged. It’s believed that this Joker origin movie will be heavily influenced by Alan Moore’s ‘The Killing Joke‘ with a Joker who was a failed stand up comedian. Honestly I’m not sure what to make of this… I mean the more DC films the better right? But I just feel like they could be putting their efforts into a character that really needs it. I’d love to see another Superman film, Cyborg film even a Deathstroke movie. I’d rather hear about developments on those films. However what I took from this whole story is that Warner Bros. with this film are attempting to create a separate DC universe where standalone films such as this will exist. Now I think that’s a great idea I love the thought of putting out these DC storylines in film which require no build up or universe building at all. If this goes well this could be the start of something great for DC.

More Shazam set photos leak
Shazam-newlook-header-678x381

Last week set photos from the upcoming Shazam movie leaked and the internet as it usually does went crazy. Some loved it and some just outright hated it. I’ll be honest I didn’t like what I saw but I knew this was a bad picture in general. Shazam is a character where the costume in live action is going to require a lot of VFX because of his powers and you’re just not going to see that until we get the final product. Thankfully with these newly leaked images which I must say are with a MUCH better angle I really like the suit. My biggest worry from the original suit was it looked like the material was cheap. However with these recent images the material for the suit looks good and the suit is heavily detailed which is another worry I had. Overall I’m seeing a lot more positive reactions to these latest images. Also leaked from the set were images of Zachary Levi’s Shazam going up against the main villain Doctor Sivana played by Mark Strong which provide for an interesting look.

First look at X-Men: Dark Phoenix costumes

Screen Shot 2018-03-12 at 22.50.50.png

Just like with Shazam another movie that is currently shooting is X-Men: Dark Phoenix also experienced leaks of a set image. Granted there aren’t as many set photos that leaked it’s only one really and it’s not the best quality so I’ll keep this short. In this set photo you see the cast standing around not doing much. But what got fans talking about this set photo is that we get a glimpse of their costumes for the film. The look of the costume resembles Frank Quietly’s work on the New X-Men series with the blue uniforms that have the Yellow X on them. While writing this a report also came out earlier claiming that this X-Men film will be more of a drama than a Superhero film. I personally feel that this has been the case for the majority of X-Men films and I can’t wait for this film especially after the disappointment of X-Men: The Last Stand. I’d also like to add that this film is reportedly going to be scored by Hans Zimmer too, without a doubt one of my favourite film composers ever. An X-Men: Dark Phoenix described as a drama scored by Hans Zimmer is music to my ears.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to be released on November 2 later this year

There you have it for this week!

Let me know your thoughts on the stories I covered and any feedback is welcome

See you next week!

Comic Book News ‘Weekly Roundup’ (Week 1)

Welcome to a new series that I will be doing here weekly on my site. The purpose of the ‘Weekly roundup’ is pretty simple, I will take the news and rumours from the week surrounding the comic book industry (movies in particular) and give my thoughts and opinions on them. This will allow me to cover more stories and give me a chance to write about both DC and Marvel as there seems to be new stories and rumours everyday. With that being said in this week’s edition I will be covering news such as Fox Studios future plans, Avengers: Infinity War, Wonder Woman 2, Batgirl and Shazam.

Fox Studios planning more X-Men movies

x-men-f4-deadpool-fox-disney

A couple of months ago when the deal with Disney and Fox was announced many comic book fans feared the worst. What would happen to the Fox movies? After X-Men: Dark Phoenix will they stop producing comic book movies? Well it looks like the deal hasn’t impacted futures plans at all for the studio as they plan to release 3 X-Men movies in 2019 and another 3 in 2020. Amongst these could possibly be solo films for both The Silver Surfer and Dr. Doom which were confirmed this week to be in production. Overall this is very encouraging news for all comic book fans because it means we have more studios producing these films not just two. Fox studios this year will release Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Infinity War Date Pushed up

Screen Shot 2017-11-29 at 19.58.40

Staying with Marvel they just decided to push up the date for their biggest movie to date. Yes Avenger: Infinity War will now be released a week earlier on April 27 worldwide. It’s the way they announced this new date which made everyone stop and admire the way Marvel runs its organisation. Here’s a recap of how the new release date was announced with a conversation between Robert Downey Jr. and the Marvel Studios on Twitter:

Personally I think it’s great that everyone gets to experience this huge film at the same time around the world. However does this mean that some characters will actually die in Infinity War? And they chose to push up the release date in hopes to stop spoilers from coming out by those would have got to seen it earlier in Europe like myself.

What’s going on with Batgirl?

batgirl-joss-whedon

The Batgirl project is one that has been surrounded by a lot of controversy ever since it was announced that Joss Whedon would be directing it. Personal stories that were made public about Whedon’s relationships made fans think that he wasn’t the right choice for this project in the first place. Now fast forward to after Justice League where he was brought in to do the majority of the reshoots which really rubbed fans the wrong way. Some felt he was brought in to change the film into a more Marvel like film under the studios instructions and he got a lot of the blame for Justice League. This really created a negative feeling around the Batgirl project in general, people just didn’t want to see him direct this film. However some fans actually got their wish as it was reported last week that Whedon had left the project after he ‘failed’ to come up with a story for Batgirl. Now it looks like Batgirl is back to square one with reports stating that the studio “has no imminent plans to find a new director”. Personally I felt it was a good decision for Joss Whedon to step down from the project. As a huge DC fan who spends a lot of time on Twitter, there was this negativity that surrounded the project because Whedon’s name was attached to it. The feeling around Batgirl would have only gotten worse as time went on if he was in charge.

Shazam First look (kinda)

Zachary-Levi-Shazam-Set-Photo

A couple of days ago the internet was sent into a frenzy when a picture of Zachary Levi in the Shazam costume leaked online from the film set. Now granted it’s not an official reveal of course, but that didn’t stop fans from either loving or hating what they saw. I personally love the look of the costume which resembles the New 52 Shazam with the cape and the hood. My only issue is that the materials used for the suit makes it look cheap, I was hoping for a more skin tight suit. I honestly thought the picture was a fake when I first saw it on my timeline. However I have faith in David F. Sandberg and the VFX team that they will do their best to make the suit look great when we finally get a official reveal from the studio.

Wonder Woman 2 developments

wonder-woman-2-villain-cheetah-kristen-wiig

With the success of the first Wonder Woman movie fans like myself can’t wait to see what Patty Jenkins has to offer with the sequel. Well this week we learned two things about the movie which is set to be released in 2019. The first being that the film will start production this summer in London which is great news. The second being that Cheetah is rumoured to be the main villain of the film. Along with that it was reported that Kristen Wiig is in talks with the studio to play the role. This news actually created some controversy amongst fans given her previous work. I for one have learned not to question casting decisions anymore I find them exciting actually especially when people are proved wrong. Lets hope the same happens if Kristen Wiig is actually set to play the role which we should get some official confirmation in the upcoming months. It was also rumoured that Steve Trevor’s character would also return in Wonder Woman 2. However that seems to have cooled down for now It’ll be interesting to see if there are any developments on this in the future.

That’s it for the first week of this ‘Weekly Roundup’ series, let my know your thoughts on the stories I covered above.

Also feel free to give me any feedback positive or negative I don’t mind.

See you next week!

Why you should watch ‘The Gifted’

Last month I put out a tweet asking if I should watch The Gifted. What I find hard is catching up with with all the current comic book TV shows. It feels like a new show or season is starting every week. Surprisingly the tweet received a lot of positive feedback mainly in favour for me to start watching the show. I was told by many that if I loved the X-Men then I would enjoy The Gifted. So I gave the first episode a chance which is what I do with most TV shows that I’m trying to get into. It’s all about whether the first episode can keep my interest enough to invest my time in a series as a whole. Well before I knew it after watching the first episode of The Gifted I had caught up with the series in the space of a couple of days.

What I loved most about this series is how it gave me such an old school X-Men vibe from the animated series that I watched as a kid. Without going into major spoilers the main story of the series is that the X-Men are no longer around but what they left behind is an underground organisation to act as a refuge for mutants who are being hunted down by the sentinels. One family comes to find out that the children themselves are mutants and find themselves on the run from authorities eventually joining the mutant underground. This provides for a lot of conflict and companionship that is dealt with well throughout this series with how the outsiders are now looking at the mutants to be accepted. Once at the mutant underground this is where the show is at its strength because we are introduced to characters such as Polaris and Marcus who quickly became my favourites. As a whole it’s interesting to see how the mutant underground operates and helps other mutants. At the same time the mutants have to make sure that they are one step ahead of the sentinels who are tracking them down in a continuous cat and mouse game.

One reason why I have always liked the the X-Men in both comics and movies is because they mirror social issues that go on today such as racism and immigration. The Gifted also touches on these subjects and does a good job at creating a world where mutants just want to be accepted for who they are. The writers do a good job at allowing you to see both sides of the argument because although you may not agree with the other side it’s interesting to see their thought process and where their issues with the mutants lie. One aspect I would also like to address is the CGI in this TV show. CGI is crucial to this TV show as it’s needed to showcase the mutants powers and with a TV budget in my opinion the CGI is great. With some shows you can tell that they are working on a small budget but that’s not the case here.

The best thing about this series is you don’t really have to be a X-Men at all to enjoy it, you can come into the series with no prior knowledge at all. Granted there are a lot of callbacks and easter eggs to the original X-Men characters. One of my favourite easter eggs is one of the characters ringtone being the theme song from the X-Men animated series.

With the first season being wrapped up just a couple of days ago I cannot wait to see where they go next with this series in future seasons. If I still haven’t convinced you to watch The Gifted just give the first episode a try, what’s the worst that could happen?

Let me know what you think of the series if you have watched it

My Top 5 Most Anticipated Comic Book Movies of 2018

Last year was a great year for comic book fans like myself as we were treated to a number of great films. You had films such as Wonder Woman and Logan which were praised by critics all around the world and have a great chance of picking up some awards this year. Spider-Man made his first solo entry into the MCU which was well received too and Thor: Ragnarok was one my favourite films of the year. While 2017 was a great year for comic book movies 2018 looks set to be one of the strongest years for the film genre. So I figured I’d give you an insight into my top 5 most anticipated comic book films to come out this year. One thing to note is that I left out Avengers: Infinity War from my list on purpose because it’s an obvious choice for me and fans around the world. Also I wanted to make my list a little bit different compared to the hundreds of lists you may have already read.

With that being said lets get straight into my top 5 most anticipated comic book fans of this 2018:

5. Venom (5th October 2018)

tom hard

I still can’t believe we are getting a Venom film starring Tom Hardy. You have to applaud Sony here for doing something different and taking a risk. They see the success that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is having in the MCU and what their response? To make an R-Rated Venom film starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. While the first look at Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock was revealed earlier this week and wasn’t the huge reveal as fans expected it to be. What it did make me anticipate even more is the reveal for the Venom suit which you have to think we will get a glimpse of it in the next couple of months. While Tom Hardy is the main draw for me with this film the cast surrounding him isn’t too bad either. Tom Hardy is set to be joined by Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, it has also be rumoured that Woody Harrelson may join the project too. I’m not sure why I’m so interested in this film. Maybe there’s a huge part of me that is still disappointed with Venom’s portrayal in Spider-Man 3 and this is a chance to finally do the character justice.

4. Batman Ninja (TBA: 2018)

Screen Shot 2017-12-02 at 02.17.00

I had no idea that this project existed until a couple of months ago when the trailer dropped and it’s fair to say that the trailer blew me away. Set to be released by the end of this year Batman Ninja is set in a middle ages of Japan and once again it will feature Batman going up against The Joker. However this is a Batman that no longer has his gadgets and is stripped down to his core. It will be interesting to see how Batman has to channel his inner abilities to overcome this new challenge. A lot of the trailer includes shots of Batman training in the mountains which really reminded me of Batman Begins. Other than the Batman and The Joker various other characters from the Batman universe are set to appear in this film such as Nightwing, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and many more. We’ve seen Batman go up against The Joker a million of times but this time Batman Ninja brings brings a breathe of fresh air to the never ending feud.

3. Deadpool 2 (1st June 2018)

Pool 2

The ‘Merc with a Mouth’ is back again with the second Deadpool movie coming in the summer. While returning with fan favourite characters such as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Weasel and Colossus. Deadpool 2 will also be bringing in newcomers who are also fan favourites from the comics such as Cable and Domino. With Tim Miller leaving the film in its early stages after filming the first film you have to give credit to everyone involved here because this didn’t became a huge hinderance to the project as some expected it to be. The studio moved on quickly by bringing on David Leitch as the new director and look where we are today. The release date of Deadpool 2 has actually been pushed up by 2 weeks which clearly shows the confidence the studio has with this film. As for what to expect from the film who knows? That’s part of the charm with Deadpool and especially Ryan Reynolds who is so passionate about the character. All I know is Deadpool 2 will be a great film consisting of great action scenes and endless amounts of humour.

2. Black Panther (February 12th 2018)

BP

I’ve been looking forward to this film for a long time! Even before Captain America: Civil War came out. With every cast announcement they made with this film it kept drawing me in. Now with the full star studded cast it’s impossible not to look forward to this film. The stand out for me is Michael B. Jordan who is one of my favourite actors after watching his performance in the likes of Creed. Im really anticipating his role as the main villain this time which I think he has it in him to be one of the strongest MCU villains in a long time. The trailers have been great at showing us just what Wanakda is about and its importance in the world. I’m also interested in seeing how this film links in with the rest of the MCU universe. Everything is pointing to the soul stone being located in Wakanda which won’t only be important for this film but for Avengers: Infinity War which is set to be released in May.

As for the story Black Panther looks to be a political thriller with T’Challa taking over the throne since his father’s death in Captain America: Civil War. Being a new king T’Challa will definitely face opposition with people such as Killmonger trying to challenge him for the throne. Also it’s impossible to ignore the importance of this film in today’s society with a person of colour having their own superhero movie. Granted we’ve had films such as Blade but this is different. I have friends who aren’t even comic book fans that are going to watch this film. Currently this film is set to break records as it has already sold more tickets than any other MCU film.

To be honest Black Panther may have been number 1 on this list for me but it’s January already, we are only one month away from its release!

1. Aquaman (21st December 2018)

JAsson

Now its no secret that the DCEU is in some trouble after last years Justice League which was a disappointment not only to a lot of fans but most importantly at the Box Office. However just like the Wonder Woman film Aquaman has the chance to just be itself. This film doesn’t have to focus too much on universe building and linking it in with the rest of the films from the DCEU. This is a chance to just get Aquaman’s story out there first. From Justice League I really liked what we got from Jason Momoa’s portrayal as Arthur Curry and while the scenes in Atlantis were too short for me I can’t wait to spend a whole film there. That brings me to the director of the film James Wan who I feel is the perfect choice for this project as he has a rich history in making great horror films which is what Aquaman should consist of. Also I love the choice of Black Manta as the main villain for the film. As someone that is a huge fan of the Aquaman New 52 series I can’t wait to see them battle it out on the big screen and see James Wan’s take on Atlantis.

There you have it that my list!

Let me know what you think of my list down below and also what comic book films are you most anticipating of this year?

Disney buys 21st Century Fox Assets in $52.4 billion deal

Last week rumours were reignited about Disney potentially buying key assets from 21st Century Fox in what would be a historic deal. Now these rumours were nothing new to us comic book fans as we have been hearing about a potential deal between the two companies for years but last week it seemed obvious that some type of deal had been struck between the two companies. One week later and the deal is finally confirmed, Disney has acquired 21st Century Fox in a monumental deal worth $52.4 billion. This means that the Fantastic Four and X-men are finally going back to Marvel… This is crazy! We will actually see them in the MCU interacting with the other Marvel characters.

Now there is a lot to this deal but here is a break down of what the deal means for us as comic book fans:

  • Fox will get Disney’s branding power behind some of its biggest entertainment properties, most notably Marvel’s X-Men and Fantastic Four character rosters.
  • Disney gets to complete its two major geek culture franchises, by adding the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties to its Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as gaining possession of the original theatrical versions of Star Wars, before the digitally remastered versions of were put out by George Lucas.
  • Disney will also gain a much larger library of titles and wider distribution network, thereby strengthening the company’s position as it moves to launch a streaming service to complete with Netflix in 2019.

(Via. comicbook.com)

Personally it will take a long time for this deal to sink in with me, honestly I’m both worried and excited at the same time if that makes sense. The Fantastic Four will definitely benefit from this deal. In my opinion the Fantastic Four going back to Marvel was always going to be main way for this franchise to survive. On the other hand you have the X-Men who in my opinion have been doing fine at Fox (apart from X-Men: Apocalypse). Some of my recent favourite comic book films have come from Fox such as Deadpool, Logan, Days of Future Past and First Class. I just worry that under Disney now will we be allowed to have these types of storylines and mature content with this new audience? A major part of me doesn’t like this deal from the business side because I’m just against companies building monopolies and buying out competition. As a comic book fan I believe this deal could hurt the quality of content in the future I mean who are Marvel really competition with now considering Justice League’s box office performance? I just think good competition drives quality content. Personally I was hoping for the type of deal Sony struck with Marvel over Spider-man which is more of a partnership but this is totally different.

Either way the comic book fan in me can’t help but be excited about the endless possibilities that this deal could bring regardless. I mean the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something fans have been waiting for years. Maybe this deal came too late could you imagine if this deal was struck earlier and we had the X-Men and Fantastic Four in films such as Captain America: Civil war and the upcoming Infinity War film? I guess its better late than never right. Now we will be able to see our favourite comic book storylines play out on the big screen with all the characters available at the studio’s disposal.

Report: Disney and Fox deal to be announced soon

A couple of months ago it was first reported that Disney and 21st Century Fox were in talks for the rights of properties such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Since then the rumours seemed to have died down until today. CNBC is now reporting that talks between the two companies are back on and it looks like a deal could be ‘announced as early as next week’. With the deal worth a reportedly $60 billion one has to think that talks have been going on for sometime now. If the deal was to go through it would mean that the television and movie assets from 21st Century Fox will move to Disney. Here at ‘Comic Book Talk’ we are obviously going to be focusing on the comic book side of this deal. What does this mean for the X-Men? Fantastic Four? New Mutants? and shows such as the Gifted?

Surely this will mean we will see the likes of the X-Men and Fantastic Four in the MCU and one day in a Avengers film. As for the TV side of the assets I do hope that shows such as the Gifted are left untouched and kept separate. In my opinion while it would be amazing to finally see the Fantastic Four and X-Men alongside the Avengers what impact would this deal have on the business? Personally I just worry about the building of monopolies and buying up competition in general when it comes to any industry. Will this deal kill competition in the comic book genre and most importantly impact the creativity of these potential projects?

One major worry comic book fans seem to have with this pending deal is how will the mature storylines and characters of the X-Men/Deadpool be impacted? While Marvel has shown with their Netflix series they are capable of producing this type of content with shows such as The Punisher and DareDevil. With my recent favourite comic book films being Days of Future’s Past, Logan, First Class and Deadpool its hard for me to these type of films under the Disney umbrella. One part of me feels that the X-Men franchise doesn’t need this deal. On the other hand the Fantastic Four franchise definitely needs Marvel right now.

Last week I remember the Russo brothers talking about how the 4th Avengers film will be the end of the cinematic universe as we know it. Also you had Kevin Feige claiming they already know the next 30 films they are going to make. I cannot help but think that this pending deal definitely has something to do with their upcoming schedule because of how calculated they are at Marvel. I wont be surprised if we see the X-Men and Fantastic Four share the big screen with the Avengers and potentially with their own rebooted series during Phase four of the MCU which is set to date from 2019-2028.

Will this kill the comic book movie industry or make it better?

Should the X-Men and Fantastic Four go to Marvel?

It feels like every year the same question starts to crop up which is “How long until Marvel finally acquires the film licences for both the X-men and Fantastic Four?” The recent success of Spider-man Homecoming was bound to raise more of these type of questions that why don’t Fox make a deal with Marvel like Sony did with Spider-man?
