Over the past couple of days director Zack Snyder held a directors cut event for fans in California. The first two days consisted of watching the directors cuts for Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen. And for the last day Batman V Superman was screened as the event came to an end. Just like the previous two screenings this was also followed by a Q&A session and this is where things got kind of crazy. Of course the elephant in the room was addressed which is Justice League. Now the audience member didn’t ask something like “When are we going to see the Snyder Cut?”. But she questioned Zack’s original plans for the Justice League movie(s). Before we get into his response this is what we knew before about his Justice League arc thanks to Kevin Smith.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League Trilogy
Justice League Part 1: Justice League defeats Steppenwolf with appearance of Darkseid
Justice League Part 2: Justice League take the fight to Darkseid on Apokolips and they LOSE
Justice League Part 3: Takes place after Darkseid wins and is set in the Knightmare universe from BvS.
Last night Snyder went into more detail about the third movie which is set in the Knightmare timeline. We were under the impression from the Knightmare scene in BvS that Superman turned evil because he lost Lois Lane. But how did he lose Lois Lane? In the scene he clearly blames bruce as he says to him “She was my world and you took her from me”. Yesterday Snyder explained how Darkseid was the one who was going to kill Lois Lane in the Batcave, turing Superman’s world upside down. And this would lead to him blaming Bruce for everything that happened. It wasn’t specified but my guess would be that Superman became an agent for Darkseid with the Anti-Life equation playing a major role.
So the main thing to take away is Darkseid killing Lois triggers the whole post apocalyptic world. Snyder also went on to state that some of the Justice League members would have fallen in the process and it’s left up to Cyborg, Flash and Batman to correct everything. Cyborg and Batman help send Flash back in time to warn Bruce just like we saw in Batman v Superman. And what happens next? I guess we’ll never know. I hope the script for the original Justice League movie leaks one day. I know some people aren’t a fan of Snyder’s style, but one thing I admire about his movies is how he pushes the envelope. He doesn’t just go out to make ‘safe’ movies, he really tries to go above and beyond and I appreciate that. I would’ve loved to have seen how his whole vision played out.

P.S. If things went according to plan we probably would of had an Avengers movie and a Justice League movie use time travel in the same year. Crazy right?

For huge Superman fans like myself the return of the Man of Steel was one of the most anticipated moments in this year’s Justice League film. Looking back at the comic book history of the character with the death and return of Superman fans were expecting to see him return in a black suit. This was also heavily teased by Henry Cavill on Instagram who shortly after the release of Dawn of Justice posted what looked to be a close up of a black Superman suit with the hashtag #Superman. One year later to the fans dismay there was no black suit to be seen when Superman eventually returned in Justice League. Shortly after the release of the film a lot of information started to leak about storylines that were changed/scrapped. One of those leaks which I was particularly interested in was the claims of there not being a black suit in the script at all from the start. Now granted a lot of this information at the time came from a Reddit user so we have to take it with a grain of salt. However just yesterday it was confirmed by Fabian Wagner (Director of photography for Justice League) that there was scenes of Superman shot with the black suit which were eventually cut.
Fabian Wagner told Inverse in a interview:
Wagner on the black suit: “There were [scenes shot],” Wagner said. “It’s a cool looking costume. Sadly, we didn’t see that either in the final cut.”
Wagner on scenes that were cut in general: “Zack takes his time with telling the stories, and I’ve always liked that about his movies. There are a few scenes that I was very much looking forward to seeing which unfortunately got cut.”
For some this new information will further frustrate fans who were already calling for a Zack Snyder cut of this film to be released in the future. Personally as a huge Superman fan although I would have loved to have seen the black suit these are just small issues to me. A huge part of me has just accepted what we were given and it is what it is. Maybe the use of the black suit and the beard would have allowed the studio to avoid the whole moustache fiasco. At the end of the day I’m just a fan and I have no idea of what type of pressure and stress comes with the making of a project of this size.
All I ask from Warner Bros. is in the future to learn from their mistakes and just let their selected director finish their vision of the project.
Let me know what you think of these recent developments below.
Did you want to see Superman return in the black suit? Were you let down?
As expected the final Justice League just dropped at New York Comic Con today. Now usually when writing reviews I like to give these in-depth introductions but honestly I can’t wait any longer. This past week has felt like the lead up to Christmas day for me in a way. So with that being said lets get straight into the trailer and my thoughts as promised earlier this week. Continue reading Review: Justice League Trailer
Now I remember not long after Batman v Superman was released there were stories circulating that at least one member from the Green Lantern Corps would feature in the upcoming Justice League film. Since then the trailer of Justice League has added fuel to the speculations as one of the main characters Steppenwolf specifically states ‘no Lanterns’. Granted we did not see any Lanterns in the trailer this line does at least acknowledge that Green Lanterns do exist in this cinematic universe.
